Area Rug

Area Rug [Blue Hellenic-Milano Persian Oriental Area Rug 8x11 Wool ...

The area rug wine designs are like a work of art. Area rugs will give you a colorful experience and presence in a room full of furniture. You can lay an area rug on a floor that already has a carpet on it or you can put it on a floor with a hard surface like wood, tiles or even stone. The area rug can be the star of the room or just one of the many important elements when decorating a home.

When you invite friends and family over one of the first things that they will notice is the area rug on the floor of your entry. If you have a spot or maybe even a whole room in you home that is a bit dull or even boring you can change it into a beautiful and colorful place using an area rug. It will create a whole new atmosphere and will easily reflect your personal style and make the statement that you want to make – a visual statement that is.

Taste differs and you might not agree with me but personally I like the area rug wine design. Wine design to me is not that it is filled with grapes but more that the wine design is reflecting the style of the old wine yards in Europe.

Maybe your taste is contemporary, modern, tribal or traditional and you might even be into shags and textures or country styles and quilts? Whatever your style is that is just great because area rugs are meant to show the world what you are all about.

Besides these styles you might even want to decorate your home with a little geography in mind and that can be easily done too. You have Persian rugs, Chinese, Turkish and French area rugs. Hey – if you wanted to you might even be able to build the world from rugs alone.

Putting colors together can be a challenge to many and you will need to test the combination of colors of your original flooring and your new rug. This is not always easy but I can be done and I am sure you will have find while you do it.

If you find the one area rug that is a “must have” all you would need to do is to redecorate the furniture and the rest of the room so that they would all match the rug. Choose the color of your area rug carefully and especially if you are thinking of redecorating the room to put it in. No need to waste time and do it all over again if it could have been avoided by planning just a little better.

If you have a room full of busy fabric patterns you might want to consider a border type area rug or a rug with a much less busy design in order to “slow down” the room.

Again color is a matter of your personal taste and how busy you would want a room to appear is solely up to you.

Often it will be an easier task to find the area rug first and the pick the furniture, the wallpaper, the paint and all the other things and then have them match the area rug. This is actually the way that professional designers and decorators do it. They start with the rug.

How to fix a problem with an area rug that's curling up on laminate flooring?
We have WilsonArt Classic laminate flooring and I was wondering if I could use any adhesive tapes to keep my area rug from curling up in a high traffic area. I don't want to ruin the flooring but the rug makes everyone trip and it isn't a cheap rug that we can just replace. Are there any adhesive tapes that will keep the rug down and not ruin the flooring?

    • ANSWER:
You can get a special tape made just for this purpose,at any home improvement store. Plus the special rubber antislip mats work good also. But you will have to roll the bent corners backwards to get them bact in place&most likely need to tape the corners anyways.

  3. QUESTION:
How do you keep and area rug from lifting at the corners?
I have an area rug in my living room on carpet but it keeps lifting at the edges. I have 2 other rugs in my hallways and I used rug tape on an all of them and only one stayed in place. Anyone know of an cheap way to get them to stay down?

I need a 10' x 6' or 11' x 7' area rug. the rug will be underneath a table and chairs with wheels. lots of traffic in this area.
    what should I look for?
    what type of material?
who is a good manufacturer of area rugs?
    what retailer sells good ones?

    • ANSWER:
first of all, are you looking for an heirloom piece?

Try oriental rugs or persian rugs. Very costly. Can set you back a couple grand but will increase in value over time.

you need to look behind the rug for the quality. You are looking for handstitched and lots of detail, etc.

The most important characteristic for me is durability and washability.

Some you can put into the washer, others need special cleaners, some are spot clean only.

The second characteristic important to me is texture. I like plush soft carpets that you can walk on with your bare feet.

Of course, color choice and design are important. (floral? transitional? contemporary?) I like transitional.

I'm a fan of Mohawk and Shaw area rugs. You can find them at Home Depot. Reasonable prices for machine made rugs.

  5. QUESTION:
How should I restore this old area rug?
I have this OLD area rug from my grandmother. The pattern is beautiful and the rug itself is is good condition, however I'd like to brighten it up! -Especially the white areas which have now gone yellow. Anyone have any ideas on how to clean/treat this rug and restore/brighten it without damaging it with harsh chemicals, like bleach?

    • ANSWER:
You may need to have the rug treated by a pro cleaner. If you do look for a baneclean dealer who does rugs. If you want to try use a store rented "steam cleaner" use Woolite in place of the store steam chemicals. mix the Woolite per directions. Mix with warm water use a very soft brush and work the Woolite into the rug. Use the "steam cleaner" to rinse with plain warm water. One pass with the plain water , 3 passes with suction only to remove the water. Let dry for a day or more before use. There are chemical brighteners, try to avoid.

  6. QUESTION:
How do I stop an area rug from moving on laminate floor?
I just put down laminate floors for my living room and I bought an area rug. The rug moves when ever I walk across it. I always thought the more expensive the rug, the heavier it was but I guess I was wrong.

    • ANSWER:
You can buy rubber mesh to put under the rug. Any place that sells carpet will have it, and so does Home Depot. Just cut it with scissors so it's a bit smaller than the rug, and you can tape it on with wide masking tape if you like.

  7. QUESTION:
How to get an area rug to stay in place on carpet?
How do you get an area rug to stay in place on plush carpet? I have a rubber backer, but the area rug keeps moving and bunching up anyway. I have to keep the area rug down because my carpet is white and I have a 1-year-old son and a Great Dane. Not a good combination for keeping the carpet clean.

    • ANSWER:
The backing that you can add can be bought either on a roll or you can buy it in different sizes in packages. There are a few different types so get the one that is made for carpet over carpet. You can get these antwhere that sells carpet. or big box staores. know your rug size when you go.These mats feel tacky but will not leave a residue. They will loose that tackiness over time from normal dirt ( not any a 1 year old would do of course lol) and pet hair. You toss these in a washer to remove and they regain the tackiness to use again .Any questions you can e mail me GL

How should I clean an area rug on a hardwood floor?
We have a very large area rug that is made from a carpet remnant. It is on our hardwood floor. It desperately needs to be cleaned and rather than hiring someone to do it, I was wondering if we could do it ourselves. I'm assuming that steaming it while it's on the hardwood is a bad idea. We live in MN and it is getting pretty cold outside, so that is not an option. What would a professional cleaner do?

You can actually take the area rug into a carpet cleaner place. Instead of them, coming to you. They can steam clean it quickly and the price would be alot less then them making an house call.

    • ANSWER:
Take a tweezers and pull one or two strand out of the rug. Hold these strands in an open flame, if it smells like burnt hair then it is wool, if it curls up and melts then it is a polyester.

  12. QUESTION:
How do I clean a large area rug that has been spit up on a lot?
I have a large area rug in my living room that my 8 month old plays on all the time. He has spit up on it several times. I always wipe it up afterwards but it is starting to smell musty. What is the best way to get the odor out? I owuld like a way that can be used often.

    • ANSWER:
You really need to get rid of the cause of the odor instead of just covering it up.

I would rent a rug doctor or similar carpet cleaner from your local grocer or hardware store. Cleaner and machine should run you about 30 U.S. dollars for the day. And this will give you enough cleaner to do a few rooms.

Other than cleaning you can use Fe breeze odor remover.

  13. QUESTION:
Stores online where I can order an area rug with overnight shipping?
I'm having a housewarming party this Sunday, and I need a new living room rug. I can't fit a large (between 8x10 and 9x12) area rug in my car or my husband's car. Are there any stores online that can deliver an area rug to me by tomorrow if I order today? I know it will cost a lot, but I'm willing to pay for the convenience of not having to pick it up.

    Help!

    • ANSWER:
I suggest Lowe's, or a rug shop in your area that have in store rugs like a carpet store. They will deliver the rug to you the same day.

  14. QUESTION:
Is there a way to get my area rug flat again?
My area rug is under our kitchen table and the legs of the table are putting huge wrinkles in it. Is there any way to fix it? Thanks!
sorry, but it's my dining room table not kitchen if that makes any difference

    • ANSWER:
only way is to put large pieces of furniture on it for awhile, then it will make it lay down flat again

  15. QUESTION:
How can I eliminate odor from a new area rug?
This is a new area rug, paprika in color with a really nice design. We are not sure what the source of the odor is. We think it is the wool or the rug backing. The rug was made in India. The odor is not from our cat. The rug smelled right away.

    • ANSWER:
It may be the ink or dye that may be emitting the odor. Baking soda is really good at taking out bad odors. Just sprinkle it on and let it sit there for about 30 minutes. Then simply vacuum it out. Do this periodically and the odor should come out gradually.

  16. QUESTION:
Any ideas on how to keep an area rug in place?
We live in a home with all linoleum floors. I have several area rugs to cover up the spaces. One rug in particular though keeps on moving around when we walk across it or we move it. It's not a big deal but it's just one of those little things that can get on a person's nerves!

Do you have any ideas on how to keep it in place? It's a smaller rug (3'x6') in the middle of a small room, so putting furniture on it is not an option! Thank you for all your help.

    • ANSWER:
DO NOT USE CARPET TAPE, it will be nearly impossible to remove from your existing floor. At most carpet stores, you will find a non-slip area rug underpad. It looks like little shreddies welded together. It provides some cushion as well as its non-slip attributes.

  17. QUESTION:
Just got a used woven area rug, and its really dirty, any suggestions on how to clean it myself?
It's a really nice 5'x9' woven American Indian area rug, but the people that owed it never took care of it. It cost over 0. to take it to a professional. Does any one have any idea's how I can clean it myself? In the olden days there had to been away!

    • ANSWER:
If the rug is hand tufted, do not clean it. If the carpet is hand knotted, be careful what you do to it because colors can run if not properly washed.

three important things if you decide to clean the rug yourself just make sure the rug is not silk or artificial silk:

1 use a mild detergent which is very, very diluted
2 do not use a carpet cleaning machine
3 make sure you clean the rug outdoors as washing a rug is freeing it of dirt and debris from many years of accumulation. I have had very bad allergic reactions where I had difficulty breathing after cleaning a rug in my bathtub.

  18. QUESTION:
What material is best for an area rug?
I want to buy an area rug for my living room. I've found some good deals online, but it always gives a material option. Usually cotton, silk, synthetics, polyester, wool, etc.

I want one that's really soft and plush, that would be comfortable to sit on on the floor. Does anyone know more about this than me? What kind should I order?

    • ANSWER:
All I can tell you is natural fibers such as wool will stain very easy and the stain will not come out.........I would stick with a synthetic material.

  19. QUESTION:
How can I take that carpet/area rug fold out?
I've had this area rug/carpet for a few years. It still looks great, but it has fold marks, and I always have to pull it to even it out, I believe it is caused by the coffee table. Is there a way to undo this?

    • ANSWER:
What the problem is, is that either the backing on the rug is bent or the rug is made of very strong durable material. Either way, using a little hand held steamer will do the trick. It might take a little while, but it does work. Be sure to protect whatever is behind it, no matter what process you decide to use! If it is small enough, you can take it outside and pour very hot water on the folds. However, hot water shrinks the material. So, you will need to have it pulled tight and secured. Using an iron with a wet cloth atop it is a good idea, too. Give that a go first. If it doesn't work, go with the steamer.
      Good Luck!

  20. QUESTION:
How do I clean a large area rug (whole thing) in a way that is inexpensive, but effective?
When we moved in here, it was winter and obviously wet. Now our nice white area rug looks horrible. If it weren't for the darker spots, and the very light spots under shelves, it would look a completely different color. I've tried everything and nothing seems to pull it all out. Seems to spread the dirt more than anything.

Does anyone know a product or method that is relatively cheap, but will clean the carpet? Any suggestions are much appreciated :)

    • ANSWER:
Rather then going through all the hassle of doing it yourself & taking a chance it might not clean, I would call around. You can probably get it professionally cleaned for -.

  21. QUESTION:
Is it tacky to put an area rug on top of carpet?
There is not much of a seperation between my small living room and dining room, and I thought an area rug may look nice under the dining room table. There is carpet throughout. Thoughts?

    • ANSWER:
I think an area rug is a great idea. It will define the space better.

  22. QUESTION:
How can I get rid of chemical glue odors quickly on a new area rug?
I just bought an area rug from Home Depot. It is wool with a fabric backing and they have used a glue that I have had problems with on other rugs. It smells so bad, that is all I can smell when I walk into that room. I smelled the sample piece when I ordered it and it didn't smell. I have gotten rid of other rugs in the past that never lost the smell. Now What?

    • ANSWER:
Bicarbonate of soda (baking soda) is great for absorbing odours. Sprinkle on the rug (the reverse as well as the front if necessary) leave for a couple of hours and vacuum off.

You can also put a few drops of your favourite essential oil onto the rug to freshen up the smell.

Also, as daft as it sounds, to get rid of chemical smells from the room itself such as glue, paint etc peel an onion, chop it in half and cover it with water, leave it in the room overnight and it will absorb the smell (don't ask me why this works but it does!)

      Hope this helps!

  23. QUESTION:
how much floorspace should an area rug cover in a family room?
We have a sectional sofa and I think that the area rug should fill in the empty space, but my husband thinks the sofa should sit on the rug.

    • ANSWER:
Typically it should cover 60-70% of open space. The sofa should not sit on the area rug or it defeats the purpose. It makes it hard to clean the area, and damages the rug, and possibly the sofa if only two legs sit on the rug.

    • ANSWER:
After the little one has gone to bed lightly spray the carpet edges with water and roll them under. Carpet has a memory you have to teach it to do what you want kind of like parting hair. 31. QUESTION:
Is it possible to convert a pre-installed home carpet to an area rug?
I have a carpet that I am having removed in order to install hardwood floors. The carpet itself is only about a year old and still in very good condition. (If we didn't have pets we would probably keep it.) We have another house we would like to put the carpet in, but would only like to do so in the form of an area rug.

Is this kind of transplant possible? Has anyone ever done this? What are some other options?

    Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
Yes you can have it bound at the edges to make an area rug. Call around to carpet showrooms and sometimes even companies that specialize in cleaning area rugs have sources for this project. A warning though. Do not place the bound carpet transformed into an area rug directly on your new hardwood flooring. The backing on carpet will act like sandpaper against the flooring and will scratch it horribly with foot traffic. Use a carpet pad or protector between the new carpet area rug and the hardwood flooring to provide a buffer. You can purchase carpet pad protectors by the size of normal area rugs, 5 x 8 for example.

  32. QUESTION:
How do I get dog urine out of the back of an area rug?

I only seem to find carpet pads or adhesives that go underneath the rug. Is there an actual rug with a coating underneath that will hold in place by itself? Thanks for your help!

  34. QUESTION:
How do you clean animal urine out of an area rug?
My bunny had her first accident on my area rug and I don't know what's the best way to clean it out. It also went through to the wood floor.

    Please help!!!

    • ANSWER:
Nature’s Miracle should work. It is available at Petsmart. Make sure you follow the direction. The main reason that it fails is that people just sprays it on and wipe it up and not let it soak into the carpet like the urine did. You my need to do this 2 or 3 time. Just reminder that the urine treatment product needs to go where the urine went for it to work properly.
In my experience, Nature's Miracle is your best bet. Good luck!

  35. QUESTION:
How do you remove the urine smell from an area rug?
Our puppy peed on our area rug. We cleaned it, but we can't get rid of the odor. We've tried both vinegar and water, as well as the Arm & Hammer Pet Fresh Odor Eliminator, but to no avail.

How do we get the smell out?

    • ANSWER:
      Cleaning Dog Urine

The first thing you will want to do, that is if you were lucky enough to come across the dog urine while it was still nice and wet (if your stain is old, see step two) is to absorb as much of the urine as humanly possible using some old rags or towels.
If at all possible, try not to use paper towels. Not only are they costly, but you can’t reuse them. It’s just wasteful.
Take your first towel, fold it in half, put it on the stain and step on it. Not just in one spot though, do a little dance all around the towel. Bounce up and down and walk on your tiptoes. Once the first old towel has soaked up as much as it can, grab the next one and repeat.
Continue this with new towels until you no longer see any wetness on the towel after walking on it. Make sure to wear some foot protection, something with a nice rubber sole.
You don’t want dog urine soaking through onto your bare feet. If you plan to reuse your old towels, mix about a quarter cup of apple cider vinegar in with your regular detergent when doing the wash.

Step two is to soak the dog urine stain with a solution of plain white vinegar and warm water. You won’t need a whole lot, just enough to pour over the stain.
Depending on the size of the puddle, most of the time I just take half a cup of the white vinegar and mix it with one and half cups of the warm water. After stirring it together with a spoon, I drizzle the mixture over the entire stain and let it soak for about five minutes.
Vinegar is a good ingredient for cleaning dog urine due to its properties as a solvent and for being antibacterial.
Blot up the vinegar and water using the same method found in step one. After that, shake a healthy amount of baking soda over the entire stain. Baking soda is extremely absorbent and will help not only with dog urine stains but also with dog urine odour.
With the baking soda in place, grab yourself a flashlight, it’s time to dig around for a couple more ingredients for the next step.
Scavenge up some 3% hydrogen peroxide (think little brown plastic bottle) and some dish soap.
Using the same pouring vessel you used for drizzling the warm water and vinegar (so as not to make a bunch of extra dishes to wash) combine about a cup of the peroxide with a little over a teaspoon of a good organic dish soap such as Seventh Generation that doesn’t contain any petroleum products.
Stir the soap gently but thoroughly into the peroxide.
Next, get ready to pour. Take your concoction of dish soap and peroxide and sprinkle it as slowly as you can, so as not to splatter, all over the stain.
Don’t over due it. Peroxide has a habit of sometimes discolouring fabrics. (For this reason, I strongly advise that you first try this in an inconspicuous area of carpeting).
Once the spot is good and saturated you may want to grab yourself a pair rubber gloves. Because now, it’s time to get your hands dirty. Using your fingertips (my preferred method) or a scrub brush, you’ll want to really get that baking soda down into the carpet.
The better you work it in, the better it’s going to be at removing dog urine.
All you can do now is let the ingredients do their magic and wait for it all to dry.
Check to see if it’s dry.
Once completely dry you’ll need to run the vacuum over it to get all the leftovers.
Take your time with this, move the vacuum very slowly back and forth over the spot, sometimes the baking soda gets a little crunchy and it takes some time for the vacuum to get it all.

  36. QUESTION:
What kind of fiber is best for an area rug?
I am looking to buy a large (10ft x 15ft) area rug in our living area. Our 10 month old will probably be playing around alot in that room so I want something that is soft, thick, easy to clean and looks very nice. What kind of fiber is best? Synthetic, natural, cotton, wool?

    • ANSWER:
In your case, wool is probably the best fiber. Your baby may be allergic to synthetics, natural fibers such as sisal are too harsh for your baby's knees, and cotton, which may work in your case, does n

  37. QUESTION:
How can I fix a fray in my area rug?
Cut it then burn it? My cat ruined my rug and I would like to try and fix it rather than getting her another one to claw at. There are tons of little pulls all over it. The center of the area rug is almost like commercial-grade (tightly weaved).

    • ANSWER:
You can just cut off the higher tufts with sizzorz but the folks here at www.rugsale.com use a hair trimmer. Like the ones that you would use to give someone a crew cut or sheer sheep with. Those give you the best results for keeping all the tufts the same level. Keep in mind there are glands in between the cats toes that leave a scent on the area rug. The cat will keep clawing at the same spots or in the same area it has left the scent in the past. Washing the rug, buying a scratching post and then actually taking the cats paws and rubbing them on the post might switch the cat to scratching the post. I have had a lot of cats and this only works sometimes.

  38. QUESTION:
How much does it cost to professionally steam clean an area rug?
I just got an estimate to professionally steam clean a 9 * 12 turkish area rug - the estimate was for 0 which seemed high to me, but I have no reference point - is this a reasonable price? I am located in New York City - Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
I'll go out on a limb here and guess that 0 is NOT high ... first, it's an Oriental ... second, you are in NYC.

      And ... it's a big rug!

Oriental rugs need to be handled with the utmost care. I would call around to several places for price quotes. I don't actually have a point of reference, either ... but I'm betting that (in your area, at least) you'll find that the price you were given is well within ballpark range.

Did you buy the rug new? If so, call the retailer and ask for a recommendation. You may be able to get a break on the price for a "referral" from the rug seller.

If you bought the rug secondhand (or bought it mass-market ... or don't know where the rug originally came from) ... you're probably stuck paying top buck, but BE SURE to get the estimate in writing before you have any work done on the rug!

  39. QUESTION:
What is the best thing to use to hold down the corners of an area rug?
I have a new area rug on top of my existing carpet. I need something reliable that will keep the corners/edges from lifting. Where ( on-line prefferably) can I buy something that WONT damage my existing carpet or new carpet?

    • ANSWER:
You can purchase double backed carpet tape at any hardware store, on line or in person.

  40. QUESTION:
What color curtains would match a very light sage green area rug?
I need to put up curtains that go on a sliding patio door in my living room. I have all natural hardwood light ash floors & a very light sage green area rug. My furniture is light tan microfiber suede with dark brown leather arms. What color curtains would match this room?

    • ANSWER:
I would go with the light tan that matches your couch.. Also what would look nice if you can find a striped patter with tan and sage green or brown.

If you are a good at sewing, you can even buy tan and sew on maybe a nice accent strip length wise along the bottom about 6 inches up in either the sage ( 1st choice ) or brown

  41. QUESTION:
Can I clean an area rug myself?
We bought a synthetic area rug that one or both of our cats used as a litter box. I'm not sure what it's made of - we got it at Wal-Mart for about . I still really like it, but if we can't get the smell out or have it cleaned for fairly cheap it won't really be worth it to keep it. Any suggestions? They'd be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

    • ANSWER:
It may be cheaper to get another (even an identical) rug than to get a steam cleaner for this rug or even to get it cleaned professionally. And you could move this rug to where your cats can really use it :) ).

  42. QUESTION:
How do I turn a carpet into an area rug?
I would like to buy a large piece of carpet to have turned into a rug but I have no idea where to take it to have this done. I know it's possible and that it's much more budget friendly, since I'm covering such a large area. Is this a possible DIY project or do I have to contact a professional? And if so, what kind?

    • ANSWER:
Where you buy the carpet they will have available a carpet binding and surging service. It may be done on site or like we did send it out w/ approximately a week turn around time. Know the size you need and you can buy any carpet in 12 and 15 ft widths and any length you need. These can be cut to the size you need. Our price was 2.25$ a linear foot (binding), but this will go different from area to area.Check into the mats that go under an area rug and the mat will differ as to what surface your going over. These will keep the rugs from bunching and "walking" Any questions you can e mail me GL

  43. QUESTION:
Which vacuum do you recommend for light cleaning for an area rug?
I have all tile floors except for an 8' x 10' area rug. I need to purchase a vacuum for just the rug. I need something that is light and doesn't take up a lot of space.

    • ANSWER:
Hi, A friend who has pets bought a Eureka boss smart vac ultra 4870 and she loves it. She said it was recommended by a leading consumer magazine and rated right up there with higher priced vacuums. It was priced around 150.00 and really cleans carpets and bare floors with the flick of a switch. Has hepa filtration, 8 carpet settings, convenient tools and ability to control suction when using tools. Hope this helps.
