A hanging wooden porch swing can be the ideal way to provide relaxing comfort for you and your family when you are outdoors.  A wood porch swing has long symbolized the typical small town American community.  But you do not have to live in a small town or country setting to enjoy these swings. 

 

There are some things that you should know when you are considering buying a hanging wooden porch swing.  First of all, make sure that you get a wood porch swing.  Cedar is the best wood for this purpose because it is smooth and strong.  What is more, it can hold up to the elements better than any other type of wood.  You can leave the swing out in the cold and rain and not worry about the wood getting warped.  Cedar is the same wood that is used on many decks and fences because of the fact that it wears well in all types of weather. 

 

You also have to make sure that you have somewhere to put the hanging wooden porch swing.  It should be attached, firmly, to the overhang of the porch.  A wood porch swing is easily installed, but should be done with someone who knows how to secure the hooks so that they will not come out.  They need to be firmly placed into the overhang and toggled.  This will prevent them from slipping out.  You then put the chain on the hooks and attached the wood porch swing to the chain.  Take a look on the box in which the swing comes in and see the weight limit.  Most swings will hold one or two adults and three children easily.

Some people use cushions on the hanging wooden porch swing, although this is not necessary with a treated cedar swing.  They are generally comfortable to sit on as they are, although cushions can even make it more comfortable.  You can also paint a wood porch swing in a color to match the outside of your home.  This often allows it to blend in even more.  When you are using cedar porch swings, or any other type of cedar wood, you should stain or paint it as well as seal it.  This will make it last even longer.  If you like the natural look of cedar, then just use a wood stain on the wood porch swing and seal it.  It will look good for a long time this way. 

 

You can put the hanging wooden porch swing in the front of the house or on the back.  Some people use them on a deck, although you have to make sure that you have a firm area in which to put the hooks so that you can hang the swing, and enough room for it to be able to sway gently back and forth.

Back door concrete landing pad question...?

I am relandscaping my backyard and need to redo the back porch. The dirt ground is 6" below the screed line (which is about 9" to the slab) and relatively level. The door is 36" wide and swings inward. My question is: What is, if any, the typical measurements to pour a concrete landing pad (without hassling with the city to get the building codes). Thickness, length, and width are my main questions. Thanks

Per the CBC 1003.3.1.7 a landing shall have a width not less than the width of the door. For residential the length need not exceed 36".

Per the ICBO code, section R312.2 the width of the landing shall not be less than the door served with a minimum dimension of 36" in the direction of travel.

Per the CABO code, North Carolina edition, Section 312: a landing shall be 3'x3'.

Standard Engineering practice: The thickness should be at least 4" (6" if you have expansive soils). Use 6x6 10/10 WWF or #3 rebar @ 12" o.c. (3 bars eq. spaced each direction) suspended mid slab.

How to deal with trashy neighbors?

My husband and I just bought our first house in February. Needless to say, the houses on our street are a bit older, snow on the ground, so yards were unkept-it was winter. Now that the weather is warming up, they have metal scraps all through their yard, air conditioning units, radiators, car parts, a swing set in their FRONT yard, couches on their porch, 4 "workshops to the right of the house, grills everywhere, 3 or 4 strollers in the yard, their dogs bark all night and poop in my yard and I never see the same face! O! Can't forget that their son rides his damn dirt bike and four wheeler through the back and up the side of my yard! Can we call the cops-haha! The whole street is kin to one another. On the warmer days, big daddy and big mama sit on the front porch downing beers and cursing all day.

Is there a Home owners association?

is their yard so messy that they are violating city ordinance? In some instances, towns will make you clean up your yard.
