Ferret Cage And Info?

Hi,
I am thinking about purchasing a ferret and have read a lot of stuff about them. We have a barely used dog cage that isn't extremely huge, but big enough I think for a ferret who gets out alot. Is it okay to use? The spaces in between the metal bar things aren't big enough for a ferret to get through. It looks like this cage, only a bit smaller and the spaces between mesh/bars aren't as wide.

Is that kind of cage okay? We have cats and can't let a ferret run free the whole day while we're gone. Otherwise we would. Is bedding necessary? We'll provide a pillow case and a blanket in the cage, some hiding places, and build some different levels, is that enough? Because I know some people just let their ferrets around the house, and the ferrets don't have or need any shredded bedding you can buy at a pet store. What do you think? Are pillow cases and a blanket okay? Thanks!!

Even smaller bars than those ones would be too big. Ferrets can squeeze through very small gaps and a proper ferret cage is better for them.

As regards to letting your ferret run free, once its mature, the cats won't want to stay in the same room as it anyway. The smells given off by poo and scenting is far too much for a cat to tolerate, and an adult ferret is a match for a cat anyway. Cats and ferrets can get on well if introduced properly.

In the cage, normal cat or dog beds with a cosy blanket would be fine for the ferret as they have a tendency to eat their bedding even though they are carnivores. Use pipes and planks of hard wood for layers to the cage as they can climb extremely well. My house ferret often greets me at the window as I walk up the street by peeping down at me from the curtain pole after climbing my smooth cotton curtains.

Their ability to climb is incredible.You will need a small litter tray in the cage filled with a good odour eating litter as the poos are extremely wet and stink to high heaven. I change Fred's litter twice a day.

Food wise you need to supply a mixture of different foods as treats, and a dry basic food to go with it as a dailey ad lib diet.

James welbeloved Ferret complete is good as a basic, as is Fred Ferret from super feeds, but long term on its own it doesn't provide enough excitement and so leads to eventual self harming due to boredom, where the ferret plucks its own fur or chews itself.

Do not feed tinned dog or cat food, unless on extremely rare occassions as a treat maybe once or twice a month. It causes stomach upsets. Day old dead chicks once or twice a week provide a chance to use their natural behaviours and the old myth that feeding a ferret on rodents and chicks is false in that it claims it turns them savage. It does not, a chance to use a natural behaviour only enriches the lifestyle of the ferret.

Special treats designed for ferrets are good as they are made for them, but only in moderation, milk and dairy products should be avoided, altho while young a small amount of fruit flavoured yoghurt once a week is ok, but no more than half a teaspoon full. It provides natural bacteria to colonise in the gut and helps digest the protein based foods they will eat later.
