Wedding planning can be difficult, but it is even harder when you are doing outdoor wedding planning. Many have planned outdoor ceremonies and had beautiful weather, but just as many have also had huge problems with rain, lightning, or wind. These can ruin the best of plans. If you are going to plan to be outside for your wedding, you always have to have a backup plan in place. This means booking an alternative location in the event the weather simply refuses to acknowledge or care about your plans. Keep it nearby and mentioned on the invitations so guests know where to go.

If you have wisely chosen an alternative location when doing your outdoor wedding planning, another step is to let everyone know. As mentioned, your guests should know where the alternative location is, but you also have to let your vendors know. These are the folks bringing your flowers, food, and decorations. This can also include your clergy, your musicians or singers, and anyone else contributing to your wedding. Set up a scenario so that they know when to go to the alternative location is to be used. That saves you a lot of frantic phone calls on the morning of your wedding. Assign someone else to make sure everything is going to the right place.

You may also want to have an alternative area for your wedding photos. Many get some done in the ceremony location, but then move outside to get some natural shots there. If there is bad weather, you have to work this into your outdoor wedding planning as well. Come up with an indoor location for your shots should the weather decide to go bad on you. If you have a local botanical gardens, this is a great option. There are other areas too that you can use for beautiful indoor shots. Plan for this alternative ahead of your wedding so it's all set to go.

Lastly, choose your wedding area carefully. If you are getting married in a park, make sure there is somewhere nearby to go in the event of a downpour. The day may be sunny and bright, but a storm can roll in out of nowhere. If you have a pavilion or other building that can be used as shelter when the unexpected happens, you won't get soaked and your guests can have shelter as well. It does not have to be right next to where you are going to marry, but it should be nearby so you can reach it in time. This part of outdoor wedding planning should be done as you choose your outside location. Look lookout for noisy traffic areas and even airport areas too, as the noise can be distracting or even ruin your ceremony.

What size generator do I need to run all the equipment for a band to play at our outdoor wedding?

We're having an outdoor wedding, in a large tent actually. But there is no access to electricity, so we need to rent generators. We want to have a live band, and I'm wondering what size generator we'll need. Thanks.

You need to know the total load of all of the equipment (in watts), then you need a very quiet generator, sized at about 120% of the total required load.

The extension cords will need to be pretty long, in order to keep the generator far enough away from the band. That means they will need to be at least #12 or #10 AWG UL listed cords (and, they cannot be plugged into each other; extension cords are not listed to be joined together) with the male ground plug not broken off or removed.

Due to the (lack of) grounding requirements for portable generators, you will get a lot of "noise" from this type of set up. The "surging" of the generator may damage any sensitive electronic gear (such as amplifiers and mixing boards); the band may not be willing to risk this.

If the location you are having your reception at has no outdoor electricity available for you to use; see if they will let you pay the local utility company for a temporary drop to a temporary meter (with a sufficient number GFCI protected receptacles – you will probably need a temporary type 3-R panel, also). Have a qualified licensed electrician install the meter pedestal, and make sure that he provides two ground rods at least 6' apart and at least 8' long.

It sounds like a lot of trouble to go through, but there won't be any noise from the generator for the band to compete with, no one will spill gasoline on their tux while refueling the generator, you may also avoid another annoyance - a fire from gasoline spilled on a hot generator, and you won't have to worry about any damage to the band's equipment. (You will also enjoy your reception more; and, if you are videotaping it, you will enjoy watching the video much more without that aggravating generator in the background.)

I am getting married on June outside and for pictures and etc. I want to have a nice clean look without looking like my face is melting. Since I normally don't wear alot of makeup I have no clue and I don't want to be taken and buy expensive makeup if it is not going to work. PLEASE HELP!!!

If it's going to be hot, go with a powder foundation, not liquid. Powder foundation will give you a nice, matte look, and liquid will make your face look too shiny. If it's going to be hot and you're the crying type, use waterproof makeup (eyeliner, mascara, etc.), so it won't run in the heat or when you're crying. Use a light blush on your face; something brighter than your complexion. If you get a dark blush, it won't show up on your face if you're dark-skinned and it will show up too much if you're light-skinned. Eyeshadow should be in a nice, cool colour, like beige or light, light pink.
