I dislike winter for so many reasons. The terrible weather and short, gloomy days make me long for sweltering summer afternoons spent on my deck under the bright July sun. I have a terrific deck and patio, and love to invite friends over for barbecues or for a few beers while watching a baseball game on TV. But that obviously can't be done in winter when the snow is piled two feet high across everything. Fortunately, the outdoor furniture covers I put on at the end of October are protecting my tables, chairs, and grill from the elements.

I think it's extremely important to prepare the yard for the winter, and can't understand why people neglect this basic task. It can be accomplished in one of two ways. First, if you have some extra space in your garage or if you have a storage shed, you can move your patio furnishings out of the way. Yes, this is kind of a hassle because most tables and chairs designed for yard use are big, heavy, and awkward to carry. But it still shouldn't take more than an hour to get everything stored away properly.

A second option is to purchase outdoor furniture covers for items you would rather not move. Outdoor furniture covers are usually made from tough nylon or polyester and might even come with buckles or straps to help keep them in place. The material is moisture resistant, which of course is the primary reason for buying the product to begin with. A good cover will protect your patio equipment from the damaging effects of snow, rain, and sun, and will keep everything looking and working like new.

I don't have extra room in my garage, so I have to use outdoor furniture covers. The alternative would be to let my stuff simply sit out there completely exposed to the elements, but that would undoubtedly lead to rust and other signs of extreme wear and tear. I don't have the money to replace everything on my patio every couple of years, so I'd rather protect the things I already have by using outdoor furniture covers.

One thing to keep in mind before buying outdoor furniture covers is that they come in a variety of sizes. It's therefore important to measure every table, chair, chaise lounge, or gas grill that you plan to cover so that you can purchase a size that will fit. The last thing you want to do is order a bunch of outdoor furniture covers right before winter weather sets in only to discover that nothing fits.

There's no sense in exposing your nice, expensive deck furnishings to the harshest weather conditions around for three or four months out of every year. Outdoor furniture covers are an easy and affordable way to weatherproof until spring rolls around again. Do yourself a favor and start looking for coverings today!

Outdoor Furniture Covers Q&A

is it ok to make my cat an outdoor cat if i can't find him a home?

I have two cats, one is mine and the other was left by a roomate who could not take him. Mine was neutered and declawed as a kitten. He is now four and is much calmer than my roomates cat. Her cat is not neutered or declawed and likes to jump on countertops and other surfaces and I'm afraid he'll start spraying soon. I have to keep my new furniture covered so he will not claw at it. I have posted an add to find him a home. If no one responds I would hate to take him to a shelter where he would sit in a cage and possibly be put to sleep. Would it be so bad to put him in the backyard and continue to give him food and water?

Yes. Stray cats are already a big enough problem, spreading disease to other cats, killing off birds and other animals just for the heck of it when they're still getting fed catfood and increasing the risk of rabies to humans. Also , since he's been raised in a house, so he won't have any idea how to take care of himself in bad weather and such.

It's unfair to him and unhealthy for the environment in general to release him. Especially if he hasn't been fixed, since he could go on and contribute even more to the problem by fathering litters of strays.

How do you protect steelframe outdoor furniture in the winter?

I intend to leave it out in winter..too hard lugging it in and out. I will buy covers for the furniture, but is there anything else I need to do to protect it from rusting. Would wrapping it in the bubble stuff that cimes in packages that are wrapped with this? Should I spray it with something to protect it?

To a certain extent, this depends on the condition and finishing of your steel frame furniture. Does the metal have a coating? If so, you shouldn't worry too much for leaving it a couple of winters outside. If not, you should be very careful and try to partially protect it from moist and cold weather (anything less than -10 degrees C may affect it, so you should really consider a barn or something similar). In both cases, use non-adherent, breathable materials to avoid condensation. Hope this helps,
