     I find that Walmart and Target have great selections and low prices...especially on area rugs. They'll be fine for a lower traffic area, like under a table. If they are going to be used for a higher traffic area, make sure you vaccum often, to keep the pile up. Otherwise, the cheaper the rug, the more often you will have to replace. But hey, thats not so bad...it gives you an opportunity to change the 'mood' of your room! Have fun!

   I'm looking for a rug with red as the main color. It needs to be contemporary/modern with a geometric or abstract design. I've tried Target, Pier 1, Pottery Barn, Ikea, West Elm and even Walmart and neither of them have a rug that I just love. Does anyone know of a cool contemporary home store (not on the list) that may have what I'm looking for?

     Sometimes you can find nice rugs at Lowe's or Home Depot. I've seen some contemporary designs in bold geometrics at those places. Also, I've seen a good selection at www.Overstock.com, on the internet. Their shipping is very low, too. Of course, ordering off the internet is sometimes risky because you can't actually see what you're getting. But if you can find a design you like, and the colors don't have to be an exact "match," or if you can START with the color and work from there, it may be a good solution.

14. QUESTION:
    Suggestions for Contemporary Window Treatment for Palladian window.?
    I have 2 windows plus a door to my lanai in my 3rd floor FL master bedroom. One of the windows is a large Palladian window. I am totally stumped on what window treatments to use on the windows. I have beautiful water views that I want to be able to see. The only reason for a treatment is privacy in the evening and heat reduction in the summer. I do not need a covering for the door (plenty of privacy).

    My decorator wants me to install 3" Plantation shutters. My furniture is a mix of antiques, including a canopy bed. Floor is porcelain tile and I will be hanging lots of original rather contemporary artwork.

    I don't want the window to take over the room, plus I feel I need something softening due to hard flooring and mostly dark wood furniture (cherry, mahogany, pine, walnut, etc). I have allergies so I can't add area rugs or anything that will catch a lot of dust.

    Does this sound impossible? I would love to hear ideas for unique window treatments.

      The plantation shutters look like the best/most common solution, probably because it will work. Do the Shutters have to be dark wood? Could they be painted? Or Even Faux painted, they could even have a mural on the face that appears when they are closed, even a mural of the View out the window.

15. QUESTION:
    What style/kind of rug will look best in my living room?
    I have a beige (suede-looking) microfiber sofa and square leather ottoman as a coffee table. That kind of rug will go well with a new contemporary style home. Would a rug with a beige background look bad? And, where can I find affordable rugs?

      I got a great shag rug at Wal-Mart for about and use it in my family room over wood flooring. It's a soft beige color and adds texture and coziness to the room. Go with a shaggy look and choose any color you like...red? sage? If you do go neutral you can always add splashes of color in other ways that are cheaper and easier to change out.

16. QUESTION:
    I have contemporary style canvas that has different overlapping circles.?
    The colors in the canvas include green, brown, orange, yellow, white, and black. My sofas are black and I am unsure of what kind of rug to get. Should I go with a patterned rug and what kind? stripes? circles?? or solid since the painting itself is busy. Help! I like the contemporary look.

    • ANSWER:
      Believe it or not you can use a rug with another geometric pattern on it. Successful design for this room is all about scale and proportion. Usually a well balanced room with patterns looks good if there is a small, medium and large scale print -- if you are mixing prints, that is. It is better to use a large scale and a medium scale print together rather than a large scale print and a small scale print.

      So, depending on how large your canvas print is (the overlapping circles) along with the size of the entire canvas, that will dictate what to select for a rug. You may just want to get a solid rug with a bold color boarder or a wide stripe rug with one or two colors from the canvas.

      The best thing to do is to go shopping and see what is available. Take your time and do not settle for anything you are not absolutely in love with. Rug shops will allow you to take home a rug on speculation to see how it looks in your room. Otherwise you may have to perhaps use a credit card to buy a few rugs, try them all out and return the ones you do not like. I usually do a lot of buying and trying as it lets me see what I do like and what I do not like right away so when my search continues, I know what to look for.

      After your rug is in place, pick a couple of colorful pillows for the black sofas to make the center of the room cohesive with what is going on on the floor with the canvas painting on the wall. Try to get fabrics with texture which will make your furniture very inviting. And, a plush throw blanket over the back edge or arm of the black sofa is pure luxury. Even an animal print would fit in to your contemporary style (zebra or leopard).

    I have a very large room with a very low ceiling. Only 2 windows, so little natural lighting. Light tan carpet, bone colored livingroom suit, and dark cherry wood tables. What color should I paint the walls? I like nuetral colors, but want to add something bright...like pillows, rugs, or curtains. I stink at decorating. Any ideas? Please help.       paint the walls in an earthy warm sage green that has a strong grey tone. the best accent color for this would be a rusty brick red, bold but muted. A couple of maroon or chocolate brown faux-leather cushions would also look great on your sofa.
      An area rug that has some bold brick red and espresso brown geometric pattern in it would be great. Or a mat made of dark brown bamboo slats would also work. For picture and mirror frames, id use either a very dark brown or black. black wrought iron or bronze would be good metalic accent colors for use in candlesticks, vases, lamps, etc. Some natural terra cotta pottery would also look great.

    Ok;I think I need some color help with a rug?
    Just moved. Livingroom has off white walls & solid wood flooring which is a golden oak color. Am buying olive & off white livingroom furniture, but need to know what colors would go well for a large rug? The curtains are also green, but more pale. I'm not picky about the style rug; can be contemporary to Oriental, as long as the colors look good.

      You will have no trouble finding a rug. Most tradtional rugs have 25 to 35 different shades of color. Just try to match 2 to 3 and you will be ok. The other colors are bonus colors that will let you use it for years to come. Take samples of colors and fabrics with you when you shop. Most stores will have expert help for you. Also many will let you take the rug home for a day to be sure you like it.

    I have a small room with pale yellow walls, pale hardwood floors, and black contemporary furniture.?
    It looks nice, but strikes me as "ho hum". I need a splash of color in the mix by way of an area rug, throw pillow, a picture, etc. I am having trouble deciding on the "splash" color. Suggestions?

      look for a throw or pillow that is patterned in different colours but includes some of yur pale yellow. If you need to pick a solid colour for a lamp or another pillow choose one of the other colours in your original patterned item.

      bring in some earthy tones to help ground and warm the space. try a couple of coordinating print pillows and solids that match the print. add a throw in a solid. an area rug in a geometric or ethnic print would be nice as well. do simple black frames on all your photos and art, it will help to unify the pieces, and tie in with your entertainment center. for great inspiration, i love pottery barn for their modern/ eclectic ideas.

      We would refer to them as 'Wall Rugs' and if you are looking for rugs for the wall you need to look for silk, art silk or viscose rugs as these are the thinnest and lightest and so best for hanging on walls plus they are usually very decorative and colorful.

    How do I coordinate rugs in a living/dining room space?
    I have a living/dining room combo, and don't know how to tie the two spaces together when it comes to rugs. I have an ivory flokati rug in my living space with a gray sofa.       Seems to me you are stuck with mixing textures and designs.

      Honestly....I would put a tile inlay area under the dining room table. It will be easy to clean and give a rich presence. Put your accent colors in sparsely so if you alter your design in the future you can pull the accent tiles and put something else in. This way you can design it how you choose rather then serching for the perfect color fit rug that won't fight with your artwork.

    ehwhatup you are exactly right. But I hate to have matching living room sets. Would I have to match the green sofa with the same exact matching loveseat that comes with it?

      Sorry but no.
      The contemporary and traditional do not compliment each other
      but instead fight each other for dominance. It's too confusing to look at. You will have to choose between the styles and I think that is where your problem is. The traditional sofa is nice and makes a bold statement and would also require other bold, curvy rounded and oversized traditional pieces to complete the room. The contemporary ones are also nice (just not my choice) but require more sleek modern pieces to complete the look of straight sleek lines.

      edit: strawberry thats a good question. you don't have to settle for the same ol boring matching sets just choose pieces that are in a complimentary color and in the same proportion as that sofa. Big and chunky or even a smaller scale would work as long as you still have those nice rounded curves. Tie them together with throws and pillows. For example if you have a brown sofa and a green loveseat, place green cushions on the sofa and brown on the loveseat and always throw in a third splash of color for added interest. Think in the lines of the furniture for accessories.

    I bought a blue-green striped Brazil rug from Target and I'm searching for curtains to match...suggestions?
    My walls are a very light aqua color, my furniture is from Target's dolce dark walnut collection with a very light cream couch. I have light bamboo blinds from Ikea, which I may or may not keep in the windows.     Warm white walls or light tan? Tiny living room in apt..lacking light?
    I have a brown couch and a greenish/blue/greyish toss pillows and curtains from Target. The color is Rocky River. I have a contemporary rug with tan brown the bluish green color and the curtains are that color. I also have wall to wall carpet (unfortunately) that is an ugly beigey tannish color.     Is it weird to put an area rug on carpet?
    I have very light colored tan carpeting throughout my house with contemporary decor. The color scheme reads more towards reds/browns/orange, and the furniture style is mainly espresso and light tan pieces with contemporary lines. The walls in my combined living room and dining room are a very light silver/gray with a half accent wall in bright red below the chair rail in the dining nook. The living room is spacious but I feel it really needs some more pop in color other than just the painting we have on the large wall. I've found this area rug that I really like and I think it would look good, but I have to ask, is it weird or awkward to have an area rug in a carpeted living room? I just can't help but feel like I need to cover up the massive amounts of neutral carpet.

      Your room NEEDS an area rug!!! It will help to "ground" the room, &, as you say, add pop. It's a great way to pull your decor colors together. Use a rug grip underneath for a rug to carpet application. (Get that @ Home Depot too) The MINIMUM size you should use in a living area is 5x7.

    I need help deciding on a color scheme for my livingroom.?
    Couches: black leather. Tables: topped with glass and cream ceramic bases. Hardwood floors with wood crown molding and on the windows.
    I want a contemporary look and have been contemplating on a more warm feel using dark woods for furniture and shadow boxes with an orange accent, the area rug will contain each color, or a black and white theme with a red accent.

      Ok the orange accent sounds nice. I would paint the ceramin base of your glass table a slightly lighter shade of orange so that it stands out and blends....creme just won't work with that color scheme.

      The black and white theme sounds nice but I think the hardwoods are throwing you off.

      Black and brown work well with hot colors.....red, orange, gold....
      Also, work nice with turquoise. I think that because you have alot of dark going on, you need to either punch up the color to make that white table work OR, lose the table and warm up the room with more browns, and beiges.

    Contemporary Paint Color HELP!!!!?
    I have a very contemporary home. Tall ceilings and short white couches. I want to use "teal" as my accent color. I have some pillows to go on my couch that are a shade of white, brown and teal. I have a bathroom that sits near the living room and I just painted it teal (that way the accent could be seen in that small room). Heres my question. The room gets "normal" light in it. Not a lot but it never stays dark either. I want the walls brown. I have a brown rug that can go with it. My bedroom sits connected to the living room and it gets A LOT of light. I want to paint it dark brown as well. Will it look funny for two rooms that are adjecent to each other to have brown? Or should I do a shade darker or lighter for each room? HELP!!!! I really need help.

      i agree with butterfly lover..... if you want o accent with teal and dark brown, go with a darker tan/beige. if your couches and trim are white, it will really pop. but if you insist on doing a dark brown wall, maybe you should do an accent wall in that color. like the wall behind your headboard.

      just remember that paint is the cheapest way to redo a room so if you don't like it, try something new. buy a few different shades of the colors you are considering and do samples of them on the walls to really see how you like it then buy the gallon.

    I need help pulling my contemporary eggplant living room together before a house gathering on May 23rd.?
    I'm VERY Contemporary. I don't want ANYTHING about me to be like any or anyone else.

    I just bought an Eggplant Microfiber Sofa and Loveseat. I've plainted one wall Ruby Red, my coffee table is VERY contemporary; it's a round glasstop goldish/yellow table, with 4 different triangles in colors of red, emerald green, purple, and blue.

    The fireplace is a shiny wood tone, and I have beautiful hardwood floors. I was told to buy a solid chocolate color area rug to bring my in table and sofa/loveseat together.

    If you can picture my living room, am I going in the right direction? The only thing that's permanent is the Eggplant set with the gold/yellow, and colorful table. Should I paint the entire room ruby red, leave the one wall red and paint the other 3 another color, or paint the entire room another color? What color window treatments should I use?

    ideas for my new contemporary room (17years old)?
    I'm 17 and ive always loved the new age contemporary type style of rooms. So my dads adding onto our house and i'm getting a new room and i've come up with pretty much all of the design, i just want to know what are some good colors to add. i want to go with the red black white grey theme.     does anyone have any other suggestions to the wall murral at the far end of the room? i'm into like vintage, hippie'sh , urban, random stuff.. so i dont know. just let me know any input you have on anything like the colors, furniture, and if i dont end up getting the hanging ball chair what should i put instead?       If you´re gonna use red, black and grey, which are "strong" colors, I think you shold get white furniture, so that your room won´t look too heavy...

      Use these colors in bedding and accessories (like on the carpet you bought, or on pillows!)
      Get black and white photos and use them as posters in black frame!
      And get modern accessories! Use silver in lamps, frames, clocks!

    Wherecan I buy a rug with an ethnic design on it?
    I don't want chinese styles but would like somrthing african or indian and it has to be trendy not traditional but not contemporary.Preferabally wool.

      I know you said you dont want chinese designs but you should go to the oriental rug place in haringey. its got direction signs on the road, the first of which is on green lanes on the left hand side (if your headed towards wood green) near the B & Q.

      We bought ours there a few months ago and they had some great stuff.

      There used to be an african shop on tottenham high road that had rugs but im not sure if the shops still there.

      Just remembered that a new rug shop has opened on green lanes, haringey. Its right opposite the tesco express. They got some wicked rugs but they aint cheap!

42. QUESTION:
    Is it stupid to design a toddler room as a bright, contemporary room?
    My mom will not get off my ass about how I'm designing my 2 year old sons room. Me and my husband painted it light blue this weekend and are starting to buy curtains, rugs, etc for it.

      Get one with a pattern with it that has red incorporated into it. Red will perk up that gray-green. Use the red for your pillows & other accents.

    Whats the best color door for a red house?
    My house is red, with white columns and soon to be light grey accents (such as the steps and front porch rug), the previous owner had a black door, mailbox, porch light, rug etc... which I dislike. The house is a colonial yet I like modern/contemporary/eclectic style. I'm having a hard time deciding what color the door should be... I know white would be ideal but I would like to be a little different and still look good.

      Red is difficult when imagining red its hard to see the tone. All colors can have a warm or cool tone to them. The difference being a color of warm tone will have a yellow "base" to it and a cool color will have a blue "base" to it.
