Double majoring in two similar subjects?

I'm a senior in high school, and two majors that extremely fascinate me and would be vital to my intended profession (biologist, possibly evolutionary) are zoology and ecology/evolution/biodiversity. I can't really decide which one to chose over the other, and I think it would be a good choice to double major.

My science teacher majored in both zoology and biology, but one of my friends told me you can't major in such similar subjects. Can you guys help me out? Can I major in them both?

It depends on the college but usually, zoology and biology are different enough to allow a double major. The advantage is that there is a lot of duplication of courses in those two - the disadvantage is that it's a lot of lab science courses and they take more time than other sorts of classes.

Some colleges have the major in biology with a concentration in zoology. In that case, a double major wouldn't be appropriate or even needed.

That double combination won't have a lot of workplace value over either one or the other but it may be helpful for opening up more grad school choices.

If you intend to become a biologist by profession, you're going to need at least a master's degree and probably a PhD. At that level your specialty area will be extremely specialized - while in undergrad you should explore as many of the biology specialties as you can (without delaying your degree) in order to be able to enter grad school in whatever area you decide.
