How to Install a Ceiling Fan - the Easy Way
When you have an easy to install ceiling fan, it can make a big difference in the climate of your home in both winter and summer. Your first step in installing a new ceiling fan is deciding where you want the fan located. The usual place to install one is in the middle of the room where it usually replaces a central light fixture. The center of the room will provide a smooth air flow to the rest of the room.
A fan uses about the same power as a light ceiling fixture, so your electrical circuit should not get overloaded. If your fan has lights as well, you should ensure that the circuit can handle the load. If it cant, you will have to run a new circuit with a new circuit breaker. If you dont have a central ceiling fixture, you will have to create one by bringing electrical power to it. You can easily tap into an existing circuit for this.
You should then check the floor to ceiling height of the blades. Measure the floor to ceiling distance and subtract for the part of the fan that will hang below the ceiling to the lower blade surface. The minimum height recommended is 7 feet.
If you find that the floor to ceiling distance is to small, check into a low ceiling mount for the fan. With certain fan models, you can increase the fan blade height by as much as ten inches. You will need at least twelve inches between your ceiling and the top of the fan blades to ensure proper airflow. If you have the space, eighteen inches works best.
Before you begin to install your new ceiling fan, it is of utmost importance that you turn off the power. You cant begin work until the power to the light fixtures circuit breaker or fuse is off. It is only then that you should remove the light fixture. Be sure you read all of the installation instructions and the electrical safety tips before beginning as well. This can mean the difference between a smooth and simple installation, and an installation that involves a trip to your local emergency room.

Floor Fan Q&A
This may sound like a stupid question, but will a floor fan cool a laptop?
My laptop's vent is on the side so those laptop cooling fan things won't work. What I want to know is if I can use a typical household fan to cool it down by having it blowing directly towards it.
Thanks in advance
The laptop cooling pads won't work.... I said it very clearly in my first post.... the vent is on the side, so they can't blow into it.
it will. it works even better if you put the laptop up on something that leaves the bottom off the ground, and have the fan blowing there. It works for me.
Should I Buy a Fan -?
for my living room, one that sits on the floor. Our electric is SO high ($400-$500 a month)
Would this help or would I be wasting money? They are only about $125.00 here.
Thanks!
NO, the fan I wanna buy blows cold air. Not a cheap fan.
That's a lot. You might want to make sure your A/C unit (if it's central air) is operating correctly and sized correctly for your house. If you are using window air conditioners, consider a central a/c unit if possible. It sounds like it would pay off for you rather quickly if you are paying 400-500 dols./month. Central units use much less power.
Consider florescent light bulbs, incandescent burn really hot and are always blowing out anyways.
Also, I don't necessarily buy into the idea that you'll save a lot of money by turning down your a/c. Your fridge, for example, will have to work harder in a hotter house.
Come to think of it, you might want to check your other appliances to make sure they are working correctly. Maybe it's not your a/c running your bill up.
