Hammock

The word Hammock has been grossly overused by the advertising industry. To be more accurate the Picture of a “hammock” has been glamorized by copywriters all around the world. What I would like you to picture for a second, is all those adverts of the beautiful blonde with her legs hanging over the side of a hammock, holding an umbrellered drink. Those pics really look great, don’t they? Makes you put your hand over your heart and say wow, I wish I was there.

Those pictures are all alike. Why the real truth is not shown beats me. The reality is so much better. The ad guys could still use the blond if they wanted to, but she would be a little more comfortable, and probably be in the hammock with two kids and a dog. Probably two dogs and a kid, and her hair tied up, with wine in her hand instead.

I really need to tell you guys a confusing story, so here goes. Back in the days when I used to set up my hammock display stall at a show, festival or music festival, I learned a great deal of stuff. I used to build up a temporary gazebo out of poles and took along a big variety of types of hammocks and hammock chairs. Firstly it is safe to say that about half of the world has no interest at all in hammocks. (Silly fools.)  Secondly that half won’t let their spouses buy one from me. Ha ha, joking. Nahh, where I really am going here with this story is that most people are so taken in by the advertising that they want a hammock for that image. And then they buy one, get home, and never hang it up – ever. I cannot fully explain why their thread of holiday-hammock-dream disappears, but it does. When I meet them again two years later they admit that they have never hung up their hammock. I have tried to confiscate those hammocks from them, but then they swear that they will go straight home and hang it up. Hmmm.

I am really pleased to tell you that generally when people buy a single point hammock chair they do tend to hang those up, and really use them. I have been doing the hammock thing for about 14 years and I love hearing the fun stories that people tell me. The family parties, fishing stories, freezing winter nights spent in a hammock alone in a caravan park – all great stories. The best part is that if you use your own hammock on a regular basis you will build up a host of brilliant memories.

I know that my regular friends and family are gonna groan when I tell you this next one, but I am still going to do it. Here is what I want everybody to start doing. Today. Break up your routine. And as soon as you start to get into a routine, break it up again. And involve your hammock in your life more often. Now the reason for this is that it slows down life. I promise you. It is routine that causes you to stand still and say – what, wasn’t it Monday just yesterday?

Now this is the important part. You must break up your routine by abusing time also. A good example of this is, get up 2 hours earlier in the morning for a month, and try one of these two things. Or muddle them up and do both. The first is to simply make up a flask of hot chocolate or coffee and simply cuddle up in your hammock, with your partner (preferably outside) and talk, while the sun comes up. If you do this without a time pressure you will find that you will be at peace with your day when it finally starts. The other option is to switch your bigger meal to breakfast, and make a festival out of a sunrise breakfast. This one works great if you are able to get the kids into the idea.

I could talk hammocks all day.
