   Why do people constantly complain about Ikea furniture when some simple tips make it last a LOT longer?
   in my experience, ALL ikea furniture problems are due to the stuff "falling apart", not from materials failing/etc. Simple things like a really strong glue really helps prevent these things from happening.

   Funny enough, Ikea electronics (lights), rugs, kitchenware,etc ALL last a really long time and are really durable as well.

   ikea needs a better rep- people gotta work a bit smarter during assembly.

     Rent a carpet cleaner from the grocery store and give your new perfectly good rungs a good once over.

     The fuzzy stuff can take years to completely go away but cleaning the carpets reduces the shedding dramatically.

   Natural cleaner for my acrylic low pile Ikea rug?? Mild dirt plus I spilled the ashtray....?
   I'm looking for a cleaner that I can make from my household products (baking soda, vinegar etc.) to clean the dirt and ash stains from my low pile super brightly coloured (think neon) Ikea carpet. Pretty sure it's acrylic. The stains aren't bad, but they just look like dark patches on the carpet. Dirt and ash from spilled ashtray (ground in a bit). Any suggestions?

   • ANSWER:
     Actually water should take most of it up--vacuum first (which I'm sure you've already done...) to get up most of it. Vinegar can't hurt. But make SURE you have an acrylic, and not a dyed wool, rug.

   I bought a new rug from Ikea and ever since I get big headaches and start sneezing around it. I think the new?
   smell of the rug is gettin to me. How can I make it so that I don't react this way around it. Would airing it out help or would i need something to spray on it anyone's suggestions are greatly appreciated!

     It would take ALOT of airing out. This could be the material the rug is made of or something they have put on the rug for some reason..Scotchgard or something. I suggest a spray on carpet cleaner from the store where you rub it in and vacuum it up when it is dry.

    I bought a rug from ikea, and it says to "professional flat wash (water)"?
    does anyone know what this is?The rug only cost £6.99, and I am quite attached to it, so dont really want to part with it, especially as they dont sell them anymore!But it is filthy!

    I was thinking of maybe just putting it in the bath with some detergent and rinsing it down with the shower head, as supposed to paying to get it cleaned which costs a bomb!

      Lovely, but they are hard to clean--make sure you vacuum with the fibre, otherwise they poof up. I adore mine.

      if they are new and beautiful don't ruin them with nail holes,it will simply take a little time to get used to having them,and like they say "pick your feet up" and you could try a double sided tape.

    Have you furnished your home with things from Ikea? If so, how do you like them?
    I really love ikea's style and prices. I want to redo my house (furnishings, etc...) on a budget and am considering buying from ikea.

      I have had things from Ikea for 4 years. All of the pieces have been through two house moves and are still in great condition (except for a dresser that I picked up the wrong way once).

      We own 2 desks and 2 office chairs, 3 shelves/book cases, an entertainment unit, a couch, a rug, lamps, pictures/frames, and an entire bedroom set. Just make sure when you pick major pieces like your couch, that you don't choose based on what is the cheapest, pick the ones you really like and they will last a long time!

      Also, I recently took a furniture design class and my professor said that you can't beat the quality for the price. "Hinges and drawers are top of the line."

    How do I clean my IKEA area rug?
    I recently bought an ikea rug, which isn't exactly an area rug, but is big enough not to put in a washer. I vacuum it regularly, but it is a white rug with big colourful blobs, and the dirt off of my feet can be seen in certain spots.. I was wondering if anyone knew how to clean it.. I was just going to buy a carpet cleaner and scrub it, but there are multiple spots with dirt. Also, I'm not sure if the colours are going to bleed if I try to do that.. I don't really want to buy a steam cleaner, but I guess if that is my only option.. but again i don't want the colours to bleed.

      I have a rectangular beige rug with sort of like a tick-tack-toe design from IKEA for my living room. Well, in just few months, I got stains & dark spots. It's way too big & heavy to put in washer or dryer. I tried a few household products, but in my experience Oxiclean seems to work the best, I don't have any color fading or bleeding problems.

      I got my Oxiclean from Bed,Bath & Beyond but you should be able to find it in Linen & Things, Target, Walmart or just google Oxiclean. Oxiclean is very effective without being harsh or abrasive. Depending on how bad or long the stain has been you might want to use a damp cloth to gently run it longer or press it a little longer. For me it was red wine, coke & bbq sauce/buffalo wing sauce dark brown stain than might be no more than 1-2 weeks old type of stain. Hope this helps!

    The ikea Rens sheepskin rug, is it real skin of a sheep?
    or is it a faux? my husband thinks our cats would really like it but I don't want to have the skin of a real animal in my house for my cats' pleasure.

      Yes, it's really the skin of a dead sheep. Cats do like sheepskin but I don't recommend it for them -- it is nearly impossible to clean their fur off of it, as it gets woven into the fibers. I use the small fuzzy polartec throws on my furniture -- the cats love them and I can toss them in the washer and dryer every couple of weeks to clean off the fur and hairballs.

    I went to Ikea, and some of their stuff was junk. Is there somewhere close to Munich you can buy home things?

    Can you dye a sheep skin rug? And if so what's the best dye to use?
    I want to buy some of those cheap sheep skin rugs at IKEA, but they are white and will get dirty. I would like to dye them a dark color - has anyone ever dyed a sheep skin rug and what kind of dyes work best on sheep skin?

      Do you mean like a bear skin rug except a sheep. If it is a skin and it has hair in it it may eventually loose the hair unless it's tanned properly. If it made from sheep fur or wool you can dye it with RIT DYE. It probably has a high lanolin content and may resist the dye the first time around though.

      Try Linens and Things-I love that place! Shipping is fast and they have a lot to choose from. I am constantly buying pillows, rugs, bedding and even glasses from them online. They have great sales too-I curtained thirteen sets of wiondows in my house for under 0 last week! And, you can shop online and then pick up in the store if you do not want to wait. It is so affordable that I have so much extra stuff in my house-I love it like a fat kid loves cake dude:)

    How do I clean my Ikea rug with some fungus on it?
    I kept my plant on top of the rug and watered it but found some black fungus on a spot. I tried hand washing the spot with Tide and coldish water but to no avail. Help! My rug is new and made of some gurney like material. Thanks!
    Hi thanks for the suggestion. I have a new problem. As mentioned earlier, I washed my rug with cool water and then air-dried. The fungus is kinda gone, but the colours have run a little. When the colours have run, can I reverse that? I also plan to machine wash the rug in warm water (as per instructions). Is that advisable or will that cause the colours to run even more? Thanks again!

    • ANSWER:
      the only way to really get rid of mold is to bleach it, and often that doesn't work entirely if the mold is deep within the fibers or in the weaving. chances are though that bleaching that area of the rug would ruin it right? you could try a solution of water and tea trea oil, spritz it on the molded area. if the mold goes all the way through the rug, you could spray bleach or a bleach solution from the back side. the other thing is you could go ahead and bleach the area (to keep the mold from spreading) and then when it's dry and clean, put the plant back but with a plastic tray or sealed ceramic tray under it...that way the mold is gone and the spot is covered.

28. QUESTION:
    How can I clean a large cotton fabric rug?(It has dust and dirt stains)?
    I purchased this large rug at IKEA, I think its made of wooven cotton, but Im not sure (it doesnt have the tag anymore). Its really dirty, but I'm not able to put it in the laundry machine, its to big.
    The rug is this light cream color, so stains are very visible. Its got this weird stains, but they are made of dirt ,not of another substance. I already tried cleaning with the vacuum, but it doesnt remove them, the rug still looks dirty. Any ideas on how to clean it?
    The size is probably 150 cm x 200 cm

    • ANSWER:
      I used to have a rug like that. The first few years I had it I would hang it out over my clothesline and spray it with the hose using a gardening attachment, that instead of fertilizer I filled with a mixture of water and laundry soap. Once that was done I sprayed it with plain water to rinse out all the soap. After a few washes with hose it eventually came clean. I did this about 2 times a year. That rug lasted almost 10 years. I finally got rid of it when we got a new carpet. Of course you have to do this on a nice day so that you can leave the rug on the clothesline ot air-dry when you are finished.

      a 2nd hand store like the salvation army sometimes there are great finds there. and you can always refinish the wood furniture and re-upholstery the couche and other funiture. slip covers are an easy way to go as well. the only thing i would not get at a 2nd hand store is a bed i am sure you wouldn't either. but you could find a lot of great buys at the salvation army. and about ikea furniture i had a living room and dresser set from there, for college and it got me thru four years of college and i sold it when i was done i loved it. but i also bought a few things at the salvy and fixed them up. which was my roomates idea i wasn't thrilled with the idea but it turned out beautiful. good luck

      Rugs are usually made from WOOL which is got by trimming or "shearing" the sheep's hair from time to time. It is mostly NOT painful for the animal - and definitely not cruel or violent.

      But there are also sheep skin products. This is from the sheep which are slaughtered - mainly fot its meat. It is a bye-product of the food processing system.

      If you approve slaughter of animals for food, then using sheep skin products should not hurt your conscience.

32. QUESTION:
    how do i stop my rug from walking?
    I bought a rug from Ikea for my living room and it keeps on moving and getting big ridges in it. I have tried pinning it down using the sofa, arm chair and coffee table but it still gets big ridges in it.
    Has anyone got any suggestions as to how I can stop it doing this?

      You can go back to IKEA and buy a 'STOPP' anti-slip underlay, for either soft or hard floors to stop it from moving.

    Why are my two cats being territorial about a new red carpet???
    ...its the weirdest thing. I have had Porkchop (a 4 year old fixed male) and Cringer and (an 8 year old female) for about 3 years. They have never been territorial about any piece of furniture or any objects for that matter until my boyfriend and i purchased a red throw rug from Ikea that we put infront of our door. They seem to be fighting more and chasing eachother off the carpet and generally holding alot of tension since we bought that carpet. Whats the deal?

    • ANSWER:
      It could be the fabric content (is it wool?) or it may contain a scent that they find attractive. Another possibility, is that it's because of where the rug is situated. It could be an area of territory that is currently under dispute between them. You could try moving the rug to a different spot for a week or so, and if they still fight over it, then it's definitely the rug and not the location.

      If the hostilities continued, consider getting a Feliway plug-in, as they emit an aroma that promotes a calm atmosphere.

    what happens to discontinued items from Ikea? Are remainders sent anywhere?
    I am desperately seeking an orange Andrea rund rug; my local IKEA does not have one, nor is there one to be had via the website or any other reasonably nearby stores, and I am told they will not be getting any more in stock. What can I do to find one? Two days ago, I know they had several in stock; today, none!

      Try the vintage stores in your area. You can find some great stuff that you can easily clean! Also, look at antique stores.
