Indoor Outdoor Mats

Shopaholic.bm - Jellybean Indoor/Outdoor Mats

Usually when you think about indoor-outdoor carpet, you probably picture the green plastic stuff that people used to put on their porches, or those green fake grass door mats. Well, that kind of indoor-outdoor carpet is still around and being bought today, but is has grown, so to speak, in the number of styles and colors that you can choose from.

The most popular indoor-outdoor carpet that is being purchased today is made from 100% UV olefin fibers. Indoor-outdoor carpeting made from olefin is more fade resistant, easier to remove stains from, and pretty easy to clean.

As with other types of carpeting, indoor-outdoor varieties are available in different grades that cost different amounts. Check the thickness of the carpet when you go to purchase some, the thicker it feels and looks, probably the better it is.

The lower economy grade of indoor-outdoor carpeting is good for use indoors and outdoors, but only in covered areas that is not likely to be exposed to much bad weather and not too much traffic. Medium grade indoor-outdoor carpeting is good for indoor uses and outdoor uses that will be exposed to the elements.

Higher quality indoor-outdoor carpeting should have a marine backing and is excellent for continual outdoor exposure. There are even higher grades of indoor-outdoor carpeting that have the look and feel of real carpet. This is much of what is being used today for floor covering that you might want to have a more normal carpet look.

At first thought, you might wonder exactly what else indoor-outdoor carpeting is good for besides covering a porch or patio. Actually, indoor-outdoor carpeting has many uses. In a child's bedroom or playroom it is an excellent choice because it can be easy to care for. Many people use it inside campers and motor homes for these same reasons.

Camping and traveling a lot can get pretty dirty sometimes and the versatility of indoor-outdoor is great. If you own a boat that has a cabin, there could probably not be a better floor covering than indoor-outdoor carpeting. Whenever there can be water tracked in and out of an area like a cruising boat, a pool house or the pool area itself, this kind of floor covering can be great.

Installing indoor-outdoor carpet is a great do it yourself project. Indoor-outdoor carpet is lighter than regular carpeting and is not that difficult to install, especially in small spaces. Be sure and follow installation procedures carefully for the type of surface you are putting the indoor-outdoor carpeting on so you will get the best performance from it.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
Indoor/Outdoor Kitty with neck wound, Help!?
My 2 year old female cat has a small, pea-sized wound on the left side of her neck. She was in a cat fight about 3 nights ago...I noticed that she had dried blood and matted fur in the area of injury.

I gave her a bath last night, the injury was still hard to see at that time. But just today I noticed that the wound is open and draining. She's been itching...

I was wondering if I could clean and drain the wound and add any antibiotic cream to the area. A Vet visit could be too expensive this week!

She's not acting sick, also, she's not in any apparant pain. She's still purring, eating, sleeping, etc.

Is it okay for me to treat the small wound here at home? I sure thank you in advance for any advice.

If it was an emergency I would take her in immediately but this is a small contained wound...

    • ANSWER:
Most likely your cat was bitten in the neck & you have an abcess. It is good that it is open & draining, but an abcess can easily heal over on the surface, while infection grows inside. Be sure the wound has two openings in order to drain effectively - check closely (you may need to shave the neck to see the skin) - there are usually two holes from the bite, but one may have healed a bit. You need that 2nd drain hole, so it may need to lanced with a sterile scalpel or razor & that may require a vet. Clean the wound out well to remove dead tissue, probe it with a clean Qtip, as it may be much deeper than it appears & then flush the wound with an antiseptic safe for a cat, such as hydrogen peroxide. The wound MUST heal from the inside out. i can't stress this enough - if it doesn't, then abcess will recurr under the skin & can be very serious. Also, when cats with abcesses aren't treated with antibiotics, the abcesses are more likely to return, so you must be very vigilent in keeping the wound flushed daily until it heals from the inside out. If it worsens, please get to a vet asap. Please keep in mind that most deadly cat diseases such as Feline Leukemia & FIV are transmitted by bites from animals that already have these diseases. Please keep cats vaccines current, including a FeLeuk vaccine if it goes outside. Please consider making your cat an indoor only cat - indoor cats live an average of 13 years compared to 3 years for cats that go out. If your cat isn't spayed or neutered please, please do that as unaltered cats fight over territory, transmit diseases, & are responsible for bringing unwanted litters of kittens into our world - please be a responsible pet owner. Thanks. Good luck w/Miss Kitty.

  2. QUESTION:
Is it possible to do both indoor and outdoor potty training for a puppy?
Some people say the best way is to potty train just outside.

Others say to get newspaper for when they need to "go" and I'm not around.

Are puppies really that clever? Do they think "Oh! She's not around right now to open the garden door for me, so I'll just go on this piece of newspaper"

I haven't used a crate (mistake?) so my poor little puppy, 14 weeks, has to pee on the kitchen floor at night. Tried the newspaper, mats and spray. But she seems to prefer the tiles....

    • ANSWER:
You can definetly teach both. But to not confuse the lil' pup try to teach one at a time. The command "Go potty', or "Do your business" comes in handy. Very simple to teach whenever you dog goes just say the command.

Puppys are in fact very clever...THough the problem is they have so much energy it can be hard and frustrating to teach them at times. Also as long as you lay down the law in the first place they shouldnt go get the newspaper...but alwasy could, just try to correct them as best you can.

  3. QUESTION:
How many people shave their cats?
I just shaved my cat because he had bad fleas & had mats in his fur like no other. Hes an indoor/outdoor cat. More indoor then anything. But is it fine to let him outside being shaved & what not? Its summer time & its generally around 70 degrees during the day & about 50 degrees at night time.
The Christ Puncher, Haha. That is funny.

    • ANSWER:
Unless you're over the age of 60, you should always shave your "cat."

  4. QUESTION:
Indoor Track vs. Wrestling...please read my situation first, much appreciated?
I have been running for a full two years now, and I absolutely love the sport. My sophomore year I participated in indoor and outdoor track, my junior year I did xc, indoor, and outdoor, and I'm currently senior, having almost completed my second and last xc season. I'm definitely a decent runner; here are my PRs to give you an idea at what level I'm at: 5k- 19:40, 2 miles- 11:58, mile- 5:21, 1000m- 3:07, 800m: 2:25.
The main problem that I have, however, is that I don't think I'll get much better than this, so I've been thinking of late that it probably won't matter all that much if I "skip" this year's indoor track season in lieu of wrestling, something which I've been considering signing up for. It sucks because people who I never imagined would beat me have beaten me recently, and I’m going against my own “never lose hope, never give up, and keep your head held high” ideology. I want to become more muscular and develop a greater strength. I already have a predisposition towards muscle definition, being that I have a little bit larger quads than the typical mid-distance runner and well-formed biceps and triceps, factors which are all critical in wrestling and dominating on the mat. Plus, I want to not only better myself in but master the gymnastics category, being that I want to join intramural gymnastics in college.
Despite this, I'm still sitting on the fence. My mind has been incessantly going back and forth between the options, and I can’t seem to make up my mind without later experiencing much guilt. My cardiovascular and respiratory systems would change to meet the needs of a wrestler most likely, and become less like a typical runner's, which are highly advanced and trained. In addition, I have become somewhat close to all of my track buddies and would miss their antics. Moreover, the 1000m is my favorite event, only held during the indoor season. Lastly, I'm usually in the 4x800m relay, and am pretty needed as far as that is concerned; someone would have to substitue for me.
I don't think I can double up so help me decide! I'm having much difficulty deciding for myself. But the winter sports season starts on the 8th, and I didn’t really want to go through the whole “switching sports” process, because it’s semi humiliating to coaches.
I probably should also mention the fact that I haven’t been getting enough sleep, have been having trouble finishing schoolwork, and am flustered with college classes…what to do, what to do!!!!!!???
I don’t know what some of my goals are…deciding what you ultimately want in life is very, very hard!!! Deciding what’s best for yourself is not a piece-of-cake process for the majority of individuals, and much anxiety comes my way when I think about such things as all of the above!! :-/
p.s. sorry if this writing is a mess logically, I didn’t feel like proofreading it and organizing the paragraphs in a specific order. And thanks.
It's just unfortunate, because I really do like running, but idk if i should try something new and stick with it, or try to better the cardio that I've already built upon.

***Enlighten me if I come off as ignorant.

  6. QUESTION:
Is there a certain kind of paint I have to use when painting my bathroom?
This is first real project am doing on my own and am a little overwhelmed. I know I want a matte finish and that there is a special paint for that and that outdoor and indoor paint are different, but is there a paint for bathrooms with the moisture/humidity, etc?

    • ANSWER:
There is indeed special paint for your bathroom. It comes in wonderful colors and controls mildew.
You can get it at any hardware store and it goes on smoothly and lasts a long time. I had trouble with mildew in my bathroom till I painted with this, and now I'm a happy camper. No more mildew on the ceiling and in the corners. I used some paint called Kilz.
      Good Luck

  7. QUESTION:
I just adopted a yellow striped plated lizard and have a few questions?
The people I got it from just have it on an indoor/outdoor kind of mat, and said that was all he needed. But all I've read on live shows a substrate, is that important? Also, can anybody recommend a good book with info? The previous owners gave me a huge tank it is about 4 feet long, it is great! Also, can I feed it insects that I find outside ie. grasshoppers, crickets, bugs, etc or is it best to buy in a pet store?

    • ANSWER:
ok i own 5 plated lizards to be exact, first of the mat well throw it away this is a burrowin species so a substrate which allows burrowin is ideal just be careful and remove all the dust from whatever you use as it can cause respritory infections. i would recommend some sort of mulch it works great! make sure its pet approved tho and not from a garden store the mulch bought there can carrry bacteria! also make sure you have a water bowl large anough to soak in as they tend to every now and again. and a few climbin branches wouldnt hurt even tho thet dont climb alot they will every now and then! this species comin from africa need uvb on it as well as a good baskin lamp. as far as diet never use insects from outside you can seriously sicken your animal or possibly kill it. insects from outside can carry disease and the risk of pesticide. so def go to a store to buy some. crickets are well loved by this species but meal worms are liked even more. i would also reccomend every other day to put in some fresh veggies as plated lizards tend to be omnivores. hoped this helps ten points wouldnt be bad haha

  8. QUESTION:
Should I take my parents' neglected outdoor dog?
I’m a huge dog lover and I currently have an 8 month old shepherd collie mix along with three cats. Well, my parents live out in the country with an indoor Pomeranian and an outdoor Great Pyrenees that I think is mixed with Golden Retriever. He is about four years old. He has lived outside in the back yard his whole life. He has a dog house with straw, no toys, no attention, fed tons of table scraps and I feel that he is lucky to have food and water. He is overweight, matted fur, and just loves someone to pet him and say what a good boy he is. He has been mistreated and is scared of thunderstorms and coyotes. When my husband and I come over he cries for attention. He usually tries to attack my dog through the fence. Well, recently I let my dog play with him in the back yard. They got along great. My dog can out run him in a heartbeat but he enjoys the chase.

Sad story I know. Well my parents have said I can take the dog home with me. What are the pros and cons here?
I have a large backyard, but I don’t live in the country. We would take excellent care of him, but would he be able to handle the change? Would he adjust to living in a house? I’m afraid my parents would just get another dog even if I made them promise not to. I’d hate for another dog to go through that. When inside a house he goes crazy and pees. Of course, I would too if I was bound to loneliness out in the cold. How do I handle this? If I do take him – how do I transfer him into this different lifestyle?
He is neutered, he has just never had any attention so he gets kind of crazy. He doesn't understand house rules. It will take a lot to rehabilitate the dog. He is very smart and learns very quickly. My husband and I were discussing in front of him yesterday and he started "talking" to me like he knew what I was saying.
They feel he is a guard dog (who is afraid of his own shadow). They have cats that come in and out of the house. They believe he shouldn't be a house dog, that he likes it outside and big dogs should stay outside. A terrible view point I know. Their little Pom stays inside all the time and goes to the park etc. The big dog stays in the back yard.

    • ANSWER:
As Cesar Milan says dogs live in the moment ,if you take him don,t feel sorry for him just give him that new start and he will love you forever,as for your mother she should be ashamed ,how come she has such a wonderful daughter like you the way she is.The dog will pay you back 100 fold so do it and allow him to feel the love he so rightly deserves.

  11. QUESTION:
My outdoor got a lion cut today... I have a question about it?
She had to get a lion cut because since she is shedding her winter coat which is a thick double coat, she was starting to get mats that were really close to the skin no matter how often u brush her. One little piece of dried leaf or twig would get matted in her fur within a matter of a couple days... So it had to be done

My question is: since its still fairly cold, drops to 45-50 degrees at night but warmer in the day, about 70... Will she be fine at night? She sleeps on her cat tree under my large fully covered patio which is closed off with sun shades. Does she need a sweater at night or blankets?

Ps: I cannot bring her in. she is NOT an indoor cat. She gets very grumpy and depressed and tears tgings up... Outside, she is the most loveable, cuddly kitty youd ever meet... So I really cant keep her indoors

    • ANSWER:
If you have a cat carrier you could put cushions and blankets in there for her. So long as she is out of the wind and it is above freezing she should be alright. If it is below freezing then you may want to bring her in at first or try to figure something else out. Knowing cats I have owned she would probably try to kill you if you put a sweater on her, so that may not be a good plan.

  12. QUESTION:
there is a stray cat that lives outside and lately he has gotten use to me...?
I feed him and give him water. He's full grown and INCREDIBLY skinny! His hair in COMPLETELY matted too, nothinig but a bunch of clumps of hair on his body. Recently he started letting my boyfriend and myself pet him. He is so sweet and loving! He will come up to us and fall into our laps if we are sitting. Well, the lease here is up in about 6 weeks and we have been discussing what to do with him. Should we try to turn him into an indoor/outdoor cat? If we were to do that we will be able to take him with us because we are not staying in this complex. This animal is very neglected and needs a loving family. What do you think we should do? Try to tame him more? Take him with us when we move?

    • ANSWER:
Get him neutered and take him to the vet. He probably has worms from living outside and having fleas (cats eat the fleas out of their fur and that gives them tapeworms). I think cats often adopt their humans, not the other way around. I think he would make you a wonderful pet and be very grateful for regular meals. He was probably someone's pet at one time and they abandoned him. He remembers what love is like and probably has a lot to give you in return. Please adopt him!

The vet can give him a shot to get rid of the worms and any other parasites when he is there overnight getting neutered. There are low cost neutering plans available in most cities, call your local Humane Society and ask--in my area they give away 2 free certificates a year to neuter a feral/stray cat. Flea medication can be applied once a month. You will be amazed at the difference in that cat once he is fixed and rid of parasites.

  14. QUESTION:
    Should I move yards.....?
What would you do in my situation? When I moved to my current yard 3 years ago it was a lovely quiet yard with ample grazing, all year turnout, and included in my livery was full use of indoor and outdoor schools, 1 bale shavings a week and ad lib hay. Now since then, the horse numbers have doubled and we no longer get our bedding included. There is an issue with storage of our own bought in bedding too. Last winter was a nightmare with the increased horse numbers then and since then we have 6 more horses. This winter the plan is to turn out every other day, rather than the every day it has been in the past. We're using the same fields through summer and winter, and I dread to think what the fields will look like next spring after an overstocked winter. There are also more horses than there are stables, but the excess belong to the yard owner so I suppose that in essence this is not my problem. Anyway, four new stables were recently built (still not enough for all the horses though) and it was agreed well in advance which three I would have for my horses. One of them has a troubled past and I agreed with the yard owner that he would have this particular box which was set away from the others to help him feel more safe. So I've painted my boxes and fitted my mats and so on, and just about got them settled in their new stables. Only yesterday yard owner announced that two new liveries are coming so another horse in the main yard is being moved so the two new liveries can be together. The horse being moved kicks the walls when others are around him so he is getting the box that had previously been agreed for my horse, and my horse is being placed in the middle of the main yard, right in everyone's way, which couldn't be a worse place for him. Despite expressing my concerns, its been decided that this will be the new arrangement. There are lots of other niggling things, such as "yard politics" where previously everyone got on well (but add more people and you add more problems) and myself and 3 other liveries are seriously considering leaving. What do you all think? DIY Livery is £172 a month.
Its £172 per horse. We have voiced our concerns and tried to resolve things that way, but nothing has been done and things are only getting worse. There is a nice yard nearby which is £100 per horse, per month for the same (hay included, indoor and outdoor school, turnout all year etc) and I am seriously considering moving
foxhunter - the show went well! My little TB got 3rd in the ex racer class :)

    • ANSWER:
Congratulations on the show by the way. Not bad if that was the first one.

      To get to your question.

A change in routine (ie turn out every other day) is not a good option for a horse - even if you can exercise it.
And it will increase the bedding and hay bills.

And for a nervous horse to be put back where he was not happy is also not a good thing since how he is mentally will greatly affect his physical condition and the way he works. And why should your lot not be together since you have been there the longest? It would be harder for you to do and muck out 2 on one yard and 1 on another!

I would seriously consider moving too. Saving 72 pounds a month per horse is also not a bad thing! Can you pull up your mats and move them to another yard after thorough washing? I am not familiar with mats as I am disabled and have not been near a horse for many a year, but still keep up an interest and have retained my knowledge from my teaching days. They were not around in my day!

As for the paint, you will just have to cut your losses there.

I would move. Go for it. It would be better all round if they have stables to suit your nervous horse. And it sounds as if the owner of the present yard is out to make a few extra bucks regardless of the welfare of the horses - or is perhaps making waves in a deliberate attempt to lose some of the liveries so that they can move their own horses in - which is fair enough, it is their yard, but I could think of a nicer way to go about it!

  15. QUESTION:
    Athletics carnival training ideas needed.?
    Athletics carnival training ideas needed.?
I have my school's athletics carnival in a bit more than a month and I really, really want to get age champion. For that though I need to get good positions at most of the events ( The last two years I've got second). If anyone had any indoor, or outdoor, training ideas for Javelin and High Jump (fosbury flop) seeing as I can't necessarily carry a javelin and I don't have mats. I'm hoping for any training ideas I could use to better my chances at each of the different types of events. I have been training, but not specifically to any events, just 100m and field hockey so my aerobic capacity and anaerobic capacity should be alright. Any help or advice would be appreciated.

    • ANSWER:
Lie on a bench on your back with a 10 lb dumbell in your throwing arm, and with your arm fully extended take it from the floor to a position straight above you. This will work your throwing muscles or use an overhead cable and pulley system to simulate the throwing motion. High jump requires thighs and mid-section strength, so do crunches , sit ups and bicycle.

  16. QUESTION:
3 times I've found a mouse seated on my door mat, if nudged away it returns. I have 2 cats. What is up??
once the mouse entered and was caught and eaten by my indoor cat. Prior to that, I'd assumed another mouse at the matt was,"punch drunk" because my outdoor cat had played with it. BUT recently a mouse hung around the step all day. I'd chased it down a step but it came back within the day. Later my husband took it farther in the yard. It or another mouse is back after a full day!!!

    • ANSWER:
Yeah, that is super cute. What's happening is, your cats are capturing the mice and bringing them to the mat as 'offerings' to you. They play around with their prey until it's subdued, then they bring it to you because they love you for feeding them.

Another way to interpret this is that your cats (the outdoor one at least) is alerting you to the fact that you have a mouse problem. Get traps--call your hardware store and ask for the "live" traps--it's like a little cage with a funnel-shaped opening at the top. The mouse climbs in and can't get out again. These are safer around pets (like cats) than the snap traps. Pet your cats and give them treats. They mean well.

      hope this helps

  17. QUESTION:
How can I introduce my kitten to the outdoors?
I have two cats now. One is a 3 yo male, the other is a 10 month old female. I will be moving to a house this weekend and would like to let my cats be indoor/outdoor cats. The male has been an outdoor cat before and has driven us crazy for the past few months while we have lived in an apartment, so I am not worried about him. The female has never been outside (I've had her since she was 7 wks and she has lived in this apartment the whole time). She is pretty skittish when out on the balcony, if a person or car goes by she will freak out and want to come in NOW. I am worried about her being outside because of the skittishness, though she really wants to be out. She meets me at the front door every morning when I leave for work and I let her out, but she gets to the mat and wants to go back in. How can I safely introduce her to the outside? Both cats are utd with shots and have been spayed/neutered. Please dont tell me not to let them out, I have had outdoor cats my whole life.
The house does not have a fence yet, we plan to put one in. I also plan to have the cats microchipped before they are given free reign.
Thank you to those who gave useful answers. I will probably utilize the leash and harness (I already have these and am getting her used to them). I don't understand why some people feel the need to call names and insult someone just because they have a different view of things. Again, thank you for the ideas.

    • ANSWER:
It will take time, but since she's a kitten, her skittishness is probably just insecurity, not permanent aversion.

The best way to introduce her to the indoors is to just sit outside yourself. At first, she might not want to be out, or might get scared, but she will probably want to watch you and your other cats outside. Leave the door open and sit near it, outside, she will probably get up the courage join you. She will continue to be skittish and want to run and in and out a bunch, but after a few visits this should settle down.

  18. QUESTION:
    Balding cat?
My indoor/outdoor (mostly indoor, these days) cat has longish hair which occasionally has formed "dreadlocks" (clumps of matted fur, usually because a small stick or burr got caught in there) behind his ears, on his tummy, or on his behind. About a month ago he had a couple of bad ones behind his ears which we carefully cut (and worked out with fingers). However, he seems to have a bigger bald spot behind his ear than what we cut. It seems to be getting bigger, in fact. He isn't itching so I don't think it's mange. Any ideas? If a bath doesn't help, I will take him to the vet.
He's not itching and has no sores, redness or bumps of any kind.

    • ANSWER:
Probably will have to call the vet on this one for a culture.

  19. QUESTION:
    a kitty poop/food question?
my cat seems to leave a little bit of poop on her mat outside of her litter box quite often im wondering if her food is making her poop too soft and maybe its sticking to her? we feed both our cats friskies special diet our other cat is like 8 and shes indoor outdoor so she wont use a litter box we also feed them about a teaspoon heaping teaspoon full of 9 lives canned food. im going to start giving my cat some purina one for a little and see if it helps its purina one indoor formula weight control and hairbal control she is a little fat and gets hairballs occassionally but i thought maybe just a differnt food will make a difference......any suggestions?
no its not diarhea i think it sticks to her butt tho not her foot. its really annoying im sick of havin to taker her mat outside and spray it down and today she decided to bring it over by the computer desk so i stepped in it and mushed it into the carpet. it is soft but defintely not diarhea.i did see that royal canin stuff but i dont know anything about it. purina one is good isnt it?

    • ANSWER:
      >>a little bit of poop on her mat outside of her litter box quite often <<

If this is diarrhea then it is a serious condition and needs medication from your vet. If it is only a 'dingle berry' that sticks to her foot then it is nothing to worry about.

I feed my cats Royal Canin Indoor Light #37 and don't have any problems with hairballs, tooth tarter, or smelly bowel movements. It is somewhat more expensive than grocery store food but it is worth it to keep my cats healthy.

      ***************Edit**************

Hello! I think Purina One is an acceptable food for your kitty. It just depends on your budget...if you can invest a few more dollars you will get a food such as Royal Canin that has Chicken Meat meal as its first ingredient instead of vegetable proteins like corn meal. That is what makes it cost more.

It might only be pennies a day but your animal will know the difference with a shinier coat, less foul-smelling poop, and overall better health!

  20. QUESTION:
15 year old cat neglected, dirty, open wounds -but i know the family, what to do?
The family is mine. My mom got me a kitten when I was 7, and I'm 22 now living 2 hours from home. I don't visit often, maybe 6-8 times a year because my family is extremely dysfunctional. Since I moved away into the city and the cat was indoor/outdoor, i didnt want to bring him with me when I first moved away because he would have to be strictly indoor. Plus my mom wouldnt have let me take him, it was more her cat.

'Friskey' has an open wound on the top of his head that my mom says hes had for over 6 months. He has cataracts, and his fur is extremely matted. I think he might have a UTI, or crystals in his urine, because he started peeing in the house so my mom put him out in the garage with a big bowl of food... and that's where he stays. I havent been there in a long time, and when i saw him this past weekend I started crying at how desperate he was for attention and how disheveled he looked.

I am a college student, and don't have hundreds to spend on a complete vet check up for him. I also rent an apartment thats all carpet, so there is still no way I can take him with me if hes having litterbox issues.

    1) IF i did bring him to the vet, and I say its my moms cat, would they press charges against her for neglect? If so, if I say its a stray, would they not do medical treatment on him because they don't know who the owner is?

    • ANSWER:
Sto trying to protect your mom who has to all effects left this animal in this state, that is a disgrace. She SHOULD be charged with neglect, so that she learns what animal care is about and what the law requires, since she obviously has not cared about that in a very long time.If you cannot take a moral stand on this, claim it's the neighbour's cat, and that they just moved out, and MAKE your mom pay for ALL the costs from the vet. tell her it's either that or you'll tell them it;s her who caused this. She may think this is OK....question is, do you? By not making her accountable, you are in effect condoning this treatment.
Without being judgmental even tho it sounds like I am - I do not know how dysfunctional your family is - mine is too, but never ever would this type of thing be tolerated, not by anyone in the family. This is a helpless animal.

  21. QUESTION:
Who gets the right to adopt the cat who was left behind from a foreclosure?
A neighbor who I don't personally know (not even the name) left behind their cat and my landlord assumed ownership. Before it was abandoned, I was interested with the cat too but my landlord assumed ownership right away since he found it first when abandoned. I have gotten so attached to the cat and the cat would go to me and sometimes would spend a few nights in my room, clearly the cat is in need for care and attention and is quite hurt from what its previous owners did.

How can I legally adopt the cat? I miss the cat terribly especially that the teenage daughter of my landlord finds the pet cute and locks her up so that she won't spend the night with other people.. She even left the cat locked up alone even if it wants to go out, it's an indoor/outdoor cat before, and I saw a glance of it when I picked up my mails in their mailbox that it was not happy to be locked up inside and left alone, it looked scared and unhappy...

Please, any advice is appreciated. Can my landlord (or any other stranger just claim a cat to be their own after abandoned)? I am worried sick about the cat since my landlord has had 2 other cats and a few that were left most of the time outdoors and tend to neglect after his daughters got bored with them or if the cats get sick or not cute anymore.

I seriously have the means to take very good care of the cat and give it a nice home. I am moving as well because of this.. It just hurts me so much to see the cat locked up like that and be left alone with proper attention. I work from home so if I am the new owner I'd definitely try to have the cat indoors but provide the cat the much needed attention, plenty of play time and care.. It doesn't matter whether the cat is cute or not to me, it's just that I feel that the landlord is not the best owner to be claiming this cat who obviously needs to be combed everyday (fur matting, looked like a Main Coon). The cat would go to me before when it was able to to also drink from the water fountain, demand food (i give her grain-free wet food that she likes), and I'd like to bring her to the vet for general checkup and buy her pet insurance..
I meant to say it is usually left alone locked up inside when they are in school or my landlord is at work and they pretty much the teenage daughters have a busy social life and most of the time have friends over (which scares the cat even more), or they party and spend the night over some other friends house.
Yeah, you're all correct. Thank you. Sometimes, it's better to just have "friends" listen over through my rant before I can come up a plan of action on my own. Update: I've searched for the agent of the foreclosed house and was in contact with her an hour after writing this. She said my landlord started feeding the cat when it wandered off to our premises, and the cat was not his to claim. She'll give my message and phone number to the previous cat owners and hopefully I'll hear from them soon and with good news. Wish me luck! There's still hope (though small) for the cat to be in a good home, mine! Yes, Finders keepers that's what I'm afraid of, and certainly I don't want to leave this apartment with some grudges and burn bridges with my current landlord (he's going to be my reference too for future rental applications) and his daughters so I'll try to seek any legal mean possible first before I resort to drastic measures lol talking to him is NOT an option coz he's pretty much firm i

  22. QUESTION:
Can my dog be depressed that she got her haircut?
so we took my dog (a bichon frise) to get a haircut a few days ago. Her hair had gotten really bad and it was matted because she would get into bushes and stuff. I kept saying i would start brushing her more again but i am in high school and it has been hard for me to get everything done. So she has always been really playful and stuff because i spend time with her every day. So i got her into get her haircut and they had to like shave her. So after she came home that night, she wasn't acting much like herself. I just thought it was because she played with their other dogs before we went and picked her up and she was just tired. Both of my dogs are indoor outdoor dogs and both love to be outside. The last few mornings Macy (the puppy) hasn't been wanting to come out of her kennel. Is she sad because she got her hair cut off, or is she just really tired?

    • ANSWER:
Dogs don't care what they look like.
She might have been a little sore from having been groomed, but that should not last more the a day. There might be something else going on. If it continues call your vet.

  23. QUESTION:
how to go about "shaving" my cats hair.?
my cat is an indoor-outdoor cat and we live by the woods so he gets burrs in his fur. he has long hair btw. so normally i just cut them out. the other week though he stayed out for about 4 days and nights which is normal, but he came back with burrs matted in his fur. down by his skin so i cant just cut them out with out hurting him, so i was wondering if i could shave him or get a razor and just cut his hair shorter. its almost summer know so i figured if i did it now most of his hair would be back by winter. so any ideas guys?
i wasn't planning on shaving him bald, that would just creep me out (no offence to you who have hairless cats) so dont worry, but someone told me that if i took them to a groomers that they might considering taking my kittie away because they would consider it animal abuse and i loove augie (<- my cat) so is there any truth to that? otherwise i most definently would take him to a groomer.

    • ANSWER:
Get an electric razor - the kind that men use to shave their beards, they are noisy but relatively save. Don't shave your cat with regular razors cause you'll nick their skins and cause pain and bleeding. Or call up a pet groomer recommended by a vet and have them do it for you.

  24. QUESTION:
How do I know when to put my cat to sleep?
Our cat is eight years old and has had a tumor growing on her jaw for about four months. She's seen a vet twice. The last time the vet said she was 95% sure it was a cancer and that it would soon kill her (or that she would have liver failure from being unable to eat). She basically said surgery was not an option. The vet recommended pain medication and said I could try feeding her with a syringe, as she was having trouble eating her dry food and has always refused to eat wet food. She compassionately told me that when the time came (when we felt it was right), we should come back and have her put down.

A month and a half later, our cat's tumor has gotten considerably larger. Her drooling has turned into blood drool of various consistencies, which she gets matted into her fur and trails all over the house. Once a pristinely neat cat, she can no longer clean herself and she is an absolute mess and smells terrible. I try to give her baths every few days. She hates me for it, but she doesn't have the energy to fight me off. Her favorite treat was always milk (she never seemed to be intolerant of it), so she has been getting all the milk she can drink now, especially since it is easy for her to ingest. I think she may get some of her dry food down by drooling on it and softening it. We decided the syringe feeding was too torturous for her, so she doesn't eat the recovery wet food. She used to be an indoor/outdoor cat, but now she mostly stays inside and sleeps under the bed or on the couch, or sits on the kitchen table where she eats (we have a six month old puppy who doesn't make her suffering any easier). She never used to relieve herself indoors on the carpet, but has done so quite a bit recently.

I know there is not a clear cut answer to this question and everyone says you'll just "know" when it is time, but my boyfriend and I are really at a loss. Her quality of life has clearly decreased greatly and there is pretty much no chance she'll get any better. However, in response to the usual questions: does your pet still enjoy life? can your pet move around? does your pet still eat? The answers to all are still "well, kind of." She still enjoys her milk (she has always been a fiend for it); she gets up on the table and meows for it throughout the day. And, she still purrs when you pet her and will occasionally sit on your lap (though not nearly as often as she used to). While she is not anywhere near the happy cat she used to be, I don't feel like she has lost the will to live. For this reason, I am having a hard time wanting to take her in soon. But, I can't tell if I am just being selfish. My boyfriend is closer to ready and he thinks it may be crueler and more selfish of us to be keeping her alive as she is. The poor thing drools blood constantly.

This is such a heartbreaking experience (the first for us). I know the time will come, I just wish there was a little more clarity about when exactly that will be. As gross as it is, I don't mind cleaning up her blood and bathing her if she still has some joy left and I hate the idea of ending her life before she is ready. Still, she is in really bad shape. I would sincerely appreciate any and all feedback or response to this question, especially if anyone has also had a cat with mouth cancer.

I guess you just have to remember the good times and how they far outweigh the bad at a time like this. We love you, Bella ) :

    • ANSWER:
I had a dog with leukemia put down, a cat put down because her body was unable to get any nutrition from her food (forgot what it was called) and another cat put down because he grown a bladder tumor and even though we were not sure it was malignant, he bleeded all the time.

The last one was really hardest for me, because he still seemed ok most of the day, but then would just walk around the house not able to hold his urine and bleeding wherever he sat down. It was heartbreaking, but at last I made the decision when I cam from work and my place was a blood bath. I figured since he was bleeding so violently, he had to be in pain. Cats hide their pain very well, but this seemed clear. I sat with him throughout the procedure and cried my eyes out, but I believe I didn the best thing for him.

A cat that can barely eat and can't clean herself would be unhappy in my opinion. Cats are extremly clean and not being able to groom herself must be very stressful for her. If she's not eating a lot, she is probably slowly starving and kidney failure is a much more painful death than the euthanasia. It really depends on what you feel is right, but after reading what you wrote, I think it's better to relieve her now than to wait until she is in a lot of pain.

I feel for you, I do. I'm sorry you're going through this, just think about it really hard and consult your vet once again, and do what your heart feels.

  25. QUESTION:
HELP! puppy won't stop barking at the door to come in when i put him out to go to the bathroom...?
i have a 3 month old shepherd mix and every time i put him in the backyard alone to go to the bathroom, he just sits on the mat and barks. he doesn't even use the bathroom. i know he has to go because as soon as i go out and walk him to the grass he goes.

i want him to be an indoor/outdoor dog since he will be large when he's older, but everytime he's in the backyard without me, he just barks at the door.

*also, we have a rat terrier mix that's a year old that we put out with him. she plays in the grass or lays in the sun while he barks at the door. so he's not completely alone out there, he's got someone to play with.

    • ANSWER:
He is doing this b/c he doesn't understand why you are just leaving him there. You should really be going out with him so you can praise him for going outside. If you wait to praise him when he comes to the door he will think he is being praised for coming to the door and not for going outside.

I would take him out to the grass and go with him every time you let him outside until he is about 6-8 months. By then he should understand that he needs to go to the washroom outside.

The other dog can help with showing your dog proper dog behaviour, but just him being outside with him doesn't necessarily mean he will know what to do.

  26. QUESTION:
how often should i bathe my cat?
Okay so I have an elderly cat that I have had since I was 6 years old and got her as a kitten. I am now 20. And I need to bathe her because she has been an indoor outdoor cat all her life and she used to be lean, but now she doesn't move as much and has gotten fat. Her fur gets matted and dirty easily because it is so long and now she can't reach. I don't want to irritate her skin by bathing her too often so I need advise on just how often that should be. Please and Thank you!
She has no claws and I have bathed her before and its not a problem. And the reason I want to bathe her is because she doesn't bathe herself anymore, at least not as well. She is always dirty and smelly these days.

    • ANSWER:
Don't bathe her too often because that can help decrease the quality of her fur. Brush her every day or every other day to reduce matting. It's a given that outdoor/indoor cats may smell, but it's something the owner has to deal with. Bathing more than necessary can cause dander, irritation of the skin, and it can make the fur not as soft and shiny as it could be. Also, nutrition is a major component. Overweight animals can't bathe as well, obviously, and they also have the most dander, which can make the fur dull. So my recommendation is to bathe her only when you deem absolutely necessary. Don't bathe her every day or even every month...maybe every 3 months at the most.

  27. QUESTION:
please help me with my stray cat?!!?
so i have an outdoor/indoor cat and he met a friend recently who is a stray the stray who i named pancakes isn't very healthy and is still fairly young but shes kind of scared of people ive been feeding her and giving her treats so shes warmed up to me and let me pet her her short hair is all matted and shes covered in ticks fleas and scratches shes also has a huge cut on her elbow and its been pussing and getting infected she can't even walk on it i really want to get her healthy because im afraid that she might get attacked by racoons or other wild animals what can i do to help her!?

    thanks in advanced:)

    • ANSWER:
Try your best to get that cat to your vet. I had a stray that was in bad shape when he first showed up at my house. I was finally able to touch him and with help from my fiance, we were able to get him into a carrier. We covered the carrier with a thin bedsheet to help keep him calm. I am sure that if you call your vet and explain the situation, they will work something out with you to schedule an appt. I had it worked out with my vet, that when ever I was able to get him into the carrier and they were open, I could just call and bring him in. Most vets should be willing to work with you. I hope the kitty is ok. One of my cats that I have was a feral kitten when she showed up and she was in very bad shape. She had a REALLY bad infection in her leg that was caused by an accidental self declawing. (Yes, she somehow had a claw ripped out). The infection had spread to her entire leg and her leg was nearly three times the size it should have been. With weeks of care (warm compress and epson salt) and trips to the vets and three different kinds of antibiotics, it finally started to pay off. She also had a puss ball that had formed on her eye. They had to remove the puss ball and sew her third eyelid up to let it heal. (We had to keep her in a dog crate to let her heal. It was a rough few months but it really paid off. She is now as healthy as any other cat. She just has a small scar on her eye (just peripheral) and an almost unnoticable limb when it's cold out. (I am the only one that notices it in my house).

It is always worth trying!!! Don't let friend or family tell you that you should just put it down. I didn't do that to my cat and she is so sweet.

Just keep trying to catch the cat to get it to the vet. When you get to the vte, I would recommend having it tested for feline lukemia and aids before you start with any treatments. then go from there. Hopefully kitty will be clear and good to go.

    -very safe pastures
    -plastic water and feed buckets
-rubber matting in stalls with shavings
    -safely stored grain
    -kind, knowledgeable owner
-wide variety of disiplines represented- stadium jumpers, eventers, dressage, trail riders.
    -farrier and vet schedule.

would you board your horse here?

    • ANSWER:
I don't know where these other people live...must be really rural for those prices. Around here a set-up like that will run 5-0/month. The further up north you'd move along the East coast, the price would adjust to 0+.

Once you have olympic riders and trainers you're talking about a completely different level of riding and training experience. That will always drive the price up, as it is a huge advantage and opportunity for serious riders who want to compete.

Access to an indoor arena always drives the price up. The rest sounds pretty standard...it is where I live. Proven high-level trainers, multiple riding arenas for different disciplines, and an indoor arena is where the pricing point comes into play.

I'd want to know what high quality grain and hay means, specifically. Some people think sweet feed is high quality simply because they mix it themselves. It's not. More importantly, I would want to know that if I have a specific high quality brand and type I feed, will that be fed to my horse with no fuss or is there going to be a problem.

What I would pay and what I can afford are two different things. If it suits you and you can afford it, then pay it.

  31. QUESTION:
THOSE OF YOU WHO ARE CHILDCARE PROVIDERS.... 10 POINTS TO LOOK OVER AND APPROVE MY PLANS!?
I am opening a daycenter. Yes, it's approved by the government. Right now, I'm in the process (along with the people who opened it with me) to:
    - hire employee's
    - organize which rooms are needed, where, what they are for, etc
    - decorate rooms

Right now, I've decided to work on figuring out what each room is going to be for. I'd like those of you in a childcare bussiness to approve it. Look it over and tell me what your suggestions are. Obviously this is a stressful thing.

Little Ones Cradle (6 weeks to crawling)- We are only going to have 8 babies in her at the most. This room will have 8 little cribs lined up with the works, mobile, bedding, blankets, and comfort items. Of course we have 2 changing tables with each child's diapers, wipes, etc. We have a 9 block cubby section with a basket for each child. This is to keep 2 sets of extra clothes, coat, and shoes. There will be a glider to rock the children to sleep or feed bottles. In addition we have a feeding table up for those who are starting to eat foods. Then of course we have a play area with age appropiate toys.

Inch Worms (crawling to walking)- This room is similar to the Little Ones Cradle, however instead of 1 big room, there is a wall with a door dividing it. One side has cribs, changing tables, cubbies, gliders, and feeding tables. Then on the other side of the door, we have an entire play area. All are are appropiate and safe, plus the entire area is covered in a bright cheerful mat to keep the children from hurting themselves.

Tiny Footsteps (walking to 3 years old)- This room has a mat flooring for safety reasons. There are lots of toys. Plus a story area for the children.

STILL NEED A NAME FOR THIS ROOM (3 years old to 4 years old)- This room first has a morning/afternoon circle. Then we have lots different centers for center time, science, math, blocks and building, library, ABC center, manipulative play, sand/water table, acting center (puppets, puppet show area, dress-up clothes, stage), play kitchen, dolls, and computers.

Busy Bees (4 years old to 5 years old)- This room is almost the same. It has a circle area for the opening/closing circle. Then there are many centers for the kids to play in inculding science, math, blocks and building, library, ABC center, manipulative play, sand/water table, acting center (puppets, puppet show area, dress-up clothes, stage), play kitchen, dolls, and computers.

Hungry House (lunch room)- This room is obviously to eat lunch!

Mighty Jungle (Indoor Gym)- Huge room with slides, mats, and climbing. It replaces our outdoor area on rainy days.

Sleeping Beauties (nap room)- This room is just an empty room that will have cots for the children over 2 and a few cribs for the children under 2 but in Tiny Footsteps.

Little Picasso (art room)- The art room is a joy for most the children. We have fun projects for them to complete each day. They begin going to the art room then they begin to crawl.

Motzarts In Training (music room)- The children have lots of fun in this room. They learn to play instruments, sing, dance, clap beats, and move with music. All children come to this room starting when they begin to crawl.

What do you think? Also if anyone can think of a name for 3 years old to 4 years old I would love it!
blondie- Yes, the Inch Worms will be eating in their room. I agree way to hectic for them to be eating in the regular lunch room.

    • ANSWER:
How about Mighty Munchkins??? It sounds like a great day centre good luck :)

  32. QUESTION:
    Should I Switch Barns?
Okay, so currently I ride 25 minutes away from my house at a barn with the following:
70 stall facility, averaging 40 boarders. Approximately 20 to 25 school horses.
    * 2 outdoor fenced arenas (225' x 110' and 125' x 100' ) all weather sand footing, with lights.
    * 1 indoor sand arena (200' x 60')
    * Indoor viewing room.
    * 1 60' round pen.
    * 1 80' round pen for grass turn outs. It is moved every week for fresh grass.
    * 1 unfenced riding area (Approx. 66 x 160) with all weather sand.
    * Direct access to Cleveland Metroparks bridle trails.
    * 2 wash racks, 1 indoor with hot and cold water, and 1 outdoor.
    * Stalls are fully matted. Aisle ceiling fans.
    * Tack lockers.
    * Hot and cold city water.
    * Bathrooms, a kitchen, washer and dryer.
    * Lobby with a wood burning fireplace.

I ride once a week on schoolies, and I LOVE my instructor, but I am an aspiring eventer and my barn is almost all dressage with only the ADVANCED (the riders who compete at NODA shows, etc.) get to even start jumping, and I am currently an intermediate. My instructor did try to get me and enough other riders who were ready to jump into one lesson so we could learn, but there were not quite enough for a class... I love the horses and think I will wait until the end of the year to decide. But if I do switch for lessons, I will still volunteer/have a job so that I don't have to leave the horses :)

here are the barns I may switch to:
    http://www.equinedifferences.com/
    or
    http://blueridgefarmeventing.com/

I like both and would get a private lesson at both before choosing... but do you think I should switch? and if so, which sounds better for me based on the (long) paragraph I typed at the top?

    sorry it's so long! :D
sorry, by advanced, I mean that we don't just jump after we learn to trot... According to my instructor, I am advanced enough to jump. She knows I want to and I am ready, she just can't find enough others who are good enough and want to do more than just dressage to make a group lesson, and I cannot afford private lessons :(
Amore Per Cavalli- I would definately still work at my current barn :) which of the two do you think would be better suited for eventers? or jumping in general?
matthies... -I would not switch until at least the end of the year... and it's so cool that you event and love it :) I have jumped once before over a small stream while trail riding, (not that that counts as anything) but It's great that you actually love eventing, and don't just do it for no reason :)
KellyO - :) thanks for the suggestion... I didn't think about taking a few lessons at one of the other barns... I may just do that, and then I could figure out which one I would switch to when that time comes! :D
Kyle- I don't know which barn you are talking about, but I do know that at my barn, there are NOT too many boarders! They all take care of their horses, and the grooms and students take great care of the schoolies... We have 4 very experienced instructors who are always there to help us... but I don't know about Blue Ridge if that is the barn you were referring to
Brittney C - I cannot afford to take lessons at both, I may take a few at one of the other barns... but lessons are expensive in general, and I do not even has close to enough money to pay for lessons at 2 barns!

    • ANSWER:
      Sounds like a beautiful barn=)

I am an eventer and I personally LOVE eventing, I haven't done very high levels because of the horse I was on last year, and my new horse and I were having problems with her wanting to jump a little too much... (would rush to every jump, rush afterwards, hard to control, but we have much improved since last year) Anyways, If you KNOW that you want to do eventing (I absolutely LOVE cross country and dressage- and at most events you only have to do one show jumping round, which are the biggest reasons why I love eventing, because I get to do it all) then you need take the necessary steps to ensure you get to do what you want to do- it will take a while if you have never jumped though, even at lower level events (In Canada the lowest at most events is pre-entry which is like 2'3 about.. I think in the states the lowest level is pre-training which is 3 levels above pre-entry) the people still have lots of experience.

Anyways, I go to a small barn (when I say small I mean like 3 stall barn, but there are tons of kids that go for lessons, the pony club runs out of my barn and all us pony clubbers are boarders, so there are lots of boarders too) but I am very fortunate because I go eventing all summer with all my friends from pony club- they have trailers to camp in, and the owner of my barn comes with her horse too. It's a blast. So if that's what you want to do then, like I said, take the steps to be able to do it- you probably need to go to an eventing barn, the second one- blue ridge farms looks more geared towards eventers.

With that said... dressage is also VERY important in every day riding, and since you have never jumped, it would take you a long while until you were ready to event AND usually you have your own horse to event so you would have to figure that out too. In my opinion, I personally think you should stay with your barn for a little while longer, then maybe look into those other barns, check them out, inquire about what you do in lessons- some barns don't take the lesson kids out to the cross country course for a long time because it can be dangerous if you don't know what your doing , so take that into consideration, but if eventing is what you want to do and your barn doesn't teach it, then it's time you move to another barn in the near future.

Anyways, sorry for the long winded story.. haha I just really love eventing and I feel that if that's what you want to do then you should do it, but by taking the right measures. Good luck=)

  33. QUESTION:
What do I bring to a camping party?
So I'm going to my friend's birthday party on Saturday (gives me exactly 4 days to get an answer). We're camping in her garden in tents. I know to bring a sleeping bag. she is providing tents and camping mats... i need to know the stuff to bring and this is not the first time we camp out at her house but i can't remember what to bring. If it helps, I'm 13. =) I would appreciate if u suggest ideas for other stuff...like..idk LOL oh, like stuff specially for camping not just sleepover...dont suggest indoor stuff tho coz we will be outdoor for most of the day. thank u very much for all u help!

    • ANSWER:
Outdoor, Indoor, what's the difference? You're going to be in their garden, not in the middle of nowhere. Sleeping bag, pillow, toothbrush, hairbrush, pajamas, clean clothes for the next day.

  34. QUESTION:
Would you board at someone's personal barn?
If someone had a pretty well-appointed barn at their home with a couple of empty stalls, would you board there over a facility specialized in boarding? If there were no facilities specifically for boarding nearby?

Consider the barn to be somewhat similar to the following:
-Six 12'x14' stalls with rubber mats
-Tack/Feed room with individual tack lockers for each horse
-Wash stall with mats, hot and cold water
    -Lighted
    -Attached 80'x120' indoor arena
-Feed and/or supplements up to two times daily
-Daily turnout on 2-6 acres (size of pasure depends on pasture rotation) or in the indoor in bad weather
-Fenced grass area for an outdoor arena
    -60' round pen
-Near several local parks/lakes for trail riding, as well as county and 4-H show grounds

If you wouldn't board your horse at a private facility (even a well-appointed one), why not?
If you would, how much would you pay for a situation similar to the above?
    Forgot to add:
-Facility in in midwest United States
    -Stalls have automatic waterers
-Pastures have shelters and access to water
-Fencing is smooth wire with electric tape on top

    • ANSWER:
I think that sounds like a nice place. I would board my horse there. The only downside to a private barn is that you'll be responsible for finding a trainer, and you're not going to get a lot of the socialization you would get at a bigger barn. I'm at a large barn, and it's like a family there. All the kids are friends, the adults hang out, everyone goes out to dinners, we have parties, etc. But if you like the quieter atmosphere, this does sound like a really nice place.

If you would be taking care of your own horse, somewhere in the 0 range. If they taka care of it, closer to 0. (or anywhere in between depeding on your level of responsibilty)

  35. QUESTION:
How much would it be to build a barn like this?
    it would have:

    -approx. 10 stalls
    -a bathroom
    a lounge
    -mats in the stalls
    -a hayloft with stairs
    -2 tack rooms
-2 wash stalls with hot water
    -windows
-human doors & big garage doors (obviously)
-an indoor arena w/ lights, sand footing and gates

-an outdoor arena wih sand footing, fencing and jumps
-4 turn fenced grass turn out paddocks
    -a round pen
this is just my dream barn for when I buy a cheap little house on land.
    it would be in kansas

    • ANSWER:
You haven't given enough detail to make it possible to give you an accurate price.

First off, construction costs vary around the country, and vary from contractor to contractor. When we had our house remodelled, we had a detailed set of architect's plans and materials list that went out to the contractors with a request for bid. We had five contractors bid the job and the difference between the lowest bid and the highest bid was 40%. (The cost of the job came in at about 10% less than the highest bid we got, if anyone is interested.)

Without knowing details about the materials you want to use, you can't even get a good ballpark bid. Is the stable made of wood? Cinderblock? Masonry? How many doors to each stall-- one inside, one outside? What kind of doors?

Is the bathroom a single toilet and sink, or are there multiple stalls? Does it include multiple sinks? A shower? Cabinets of any kind? Windows? What kind of floor material-- tile, linoleum, hardwood?

What kind of subfloor do the stalls have: packed earth? Asphalt? Concrete? How will drainage be accomplished?

Will the tack rooms be bare rooms, or will there be lockable cabinets or closets? What kind of wall material and light fixtures?

As you can see, the questions can get pretty detailed.

Here in Southern California, you couldn't build this kind of facility for a dime less than -2 million, and that doesn't include your land costs. Do you own land or will you have to buy?

  36. QUESTION:
Other things to consider when building a barn?
I already know it's extremely costly but what are other things to consider? so far I have:

    -approx. 10 stalls
-a bathroom (one sink, one toilet, one shower)
    a small lounge
-mats in the stalls with concrete underlay
    -a hayloft with stairs
    -2 tack rooms with lockers
-2 wash stalls with hot water and matts
    -windows
-human doors & big garage doors (obviously)
-an indoor arena w/ lights, sand footing and gates

-an outdoor arena wih sand footing, fencing and jumps
-4 turn fenced grass turn out paddocks
    -a round pen

I know I would need to have the ground leveled, the plumbing, electricity, hot water tank, decide the interior walls/exterior walls, stall doors etc. anything else?
oh these are just plans for a dream barn lol. So I'm looking for like things you guys would want/love about your barn.
also pictures of your dream barn would be awesome! :)

  37. QUESTION:
what should i do? i need help... horse question?
so we went to look at boarding barns today, and i found 2 that i really like . i will describe the two with out using there names. i ride saddle seat. i know im going to get a lot of crap for that but i like it.
barn 1- this barn is 18 min. and 9 miles from my house, its got 3 indoor arenas, 1/10th of a mile indoor track, round pen, 12 acres of trails, 4H club, in the process of building lockers at each stall, in the process of building a 160X200 ft. outdoor arena, horses are out all the time unless the weather is too bad, grain 2X a day, hay 3X day, stalls cleaned 5 days a week, they do hunter/jumper, western and saddle seat, and the owner/trainer is john lyons trained. (i don't really know what that last part means, but i think its good) no extra charge for supplements, turn out or blanketing and that is 5/month

barn 2 is 20 min. and 14.5 miles away from my house. they've got 1 indoor arena, 4 big pastures outside, grain 2X daily, hay 2X, they are just a saddle seat barn, they go to a lot of shows, no 4H club, saddle rack in the heated tack room and a shelve to put my helmet and grooming box, i like the husband a lot more than i like the wife, he is just more friendly than she is, and there stalls are cecment floors with rubber mats over top. and my horse can't be on a matted stall, she just shreds up the mat. but she would only be in the stall at night, and when the weather is too bad for her to be out side. this barn is 5 if you get the board check in within the 1st and the 3rd of the month, then if you get it in outside of those days, then its 0 a month.
no nasty answers please.i'm leaning toward the first place more, but i really like both places, thanks!
i have heard of IEA. i talked with some one at Equine Affaire i think either last year or the year before adn they said that they were starting a saddle seat divison and they would let me know if they were starting a team were i live. thanks!
here is the website for the first place http://winningwaystables.com/default.aspx i just found it
my horse is in a 10X11 stall now, she is a 15.2 mare, and it seems good for her, and the stalls at the second place are 10X10.
plus at the first barn the woman would try her out with other horses until she found a group that she got along with well, cause my horse is a boss mare, and at the second barn the woman said if she doesn't get along wit hthe other horses, then she is going to have to get along, or she will be inside most of the time.

    • ANSWER:
I like the first one, but it's so far away :( If you are willing to travel so far, then it seems perfect!

On the other hand, the second one didn't sound too bad. The advantages are that it is closely and it is a saddle seat barn, which is what you like to do the most. You would be surrounded by saddle seat people and would be able to focus on your discipline. If money and time are an object, pick this one, if they are not, pick the first one.

  38. QUESTION:
Living conditions- how can I improve on a budget?
I'm going to be moving my 6 year old accident-prone TB mare from an indoor stall with a run (fly spray system, fans, and full-service (they clean her stall) to an outdoor stall with a run (I clean). I used to board her back there to save the extra 0, but the heat became unbearable (Sacramento, CA) and she's sensitive to flies.
I'm very very tight on money, so this is something I have to do. The only stall/run available is a fixer-upper. Someone has removed all the mats and sand from the run, so its just cement and gravel- no bueno. I'm so tight on money and can not afford to buy the sand or mats. I'd like to give her lots of shavings in the meantime, but she goes through a bag a day, which equals up to about 0 a month. How can I make her comfortable, as well as myself?
Unfortunately they do not offer pasture boarding. There are turn out pastures available, but only for 15 minutes at a time. I was considering moving her to the only other ranch in town that has pasture, but pasture boarding there is 0.
    UGH! haha.

    • ANSWER:
This is a tough one. There's no way you can afford sand/dirt at least?

How about where you live? Do you own larger property where you can transfer footing from there? Have you checked local 'gardening' or 'landscaping' stores... where it might be cheaper?

Maybe another suggestion- are you close to the owner? If she or he has a large amount of property, there's no way they can lone you some footing, and you can pay them back in the mean time?

Once you find a decent amount of sand/dirt, things should be easier to maintain, and you shouldn't have to eat through shavings like that. A ton of shavings aren't necessary to live. Just enough to cover the floor of the stall completely.

Other things to help keep her comfortable-

I would spray her good with fly spray each time I come out. After you ride, spray her again for when she's in her stall. Also, you could leave a salt block in there to help keep her occupied. Good luck!!

  39. QUESTION:
question for a vet, about my pet cat?
we have had this cat paco for about 2 years from a baby, he is very sweet but was taken care of my my family and i can't officially say he was mine, so they let him be an outdoor cat, the family ran into some hard times and so he has basically fend for himself but still comes around for love and looking for food but basically has been abandoned by the family, he is only about 2 years old, could he be taken to a vet clinic and giving shots to be healthy to be kept inside, i would love to keep him with me at my place, he has allot of hair clumps or mats on his back and i think the only way to fix that would to shave him, he is not fixed either, so he love me and id kind to the people he knows so could he be rehabilitated to be kept as and indoor cat?

    • ANSWER:

  40. QUESTION:
What is the best electronic systems for containing cats?
I have three "former" outdoor cats who are not adjusting to becoming indoor cats. I'm moving to a new town where if they get out more then once they can be seized, plus two of them were declawed by their previous owners so I panic when they escape. I've tried gates, locking them in rooms, etc. But theres always someone visiting and with three doorways in the new house, I don't think we'll be able to catch them everytime a door opens. I know theres electric fences out there for cats (the invisble ones) but I don't like the idea of them being confined to the lawn with no way of running off if a stray dog comes along. Already tried the 'paws away' mat things with no sucess (they would leap over it)
One of them is barely a year old so you can't even catch him if he makes a beeline towards the door.

    • ANSWER:
I have 3 indoor cats who sometimes try to get outside and all I have to say is "Get back" and they move away from the door. When they were younger I let them go outside supervised or on a harness and leash, so they tried to get out more often. I have 2 layers of doors in each outside doorway(a solid metal door on the inside and a metal screen door on the outside) so it's kinda easier to keep them from running out.

I trained them to get away from the door with a voice command using a water bottle. If they went near the door I said "Get back" and if they didn't move, I gave them a squirt with the bottle. If I was outside and the cats were waiting to get out, I would hit my hand on the door and it would scare them away.

You could always have a water bottle near each door to get them away from the door when someone comes over and tell your visitors to keep them in the house.

  41. QUESTION:
Button/Chinese Painted Quail Help? Best answer will be given?
I'm planning on getting some button/chinese painted quail for an outdoor run. It's an inclosed pen 1 metre (3 feet 4 inches) by 1.3 metres (4 feet 4 inches) by .7m (2 feet 4 inches) high with a soft weed mat roof. There's a 2 foot by 2 foot indoor hutch type thing which is 1 foot 4 inches high (60cm by 60cm by 40cm). The whole thing is enclosed with chicken wire.

    Now... I wanted to know:

    1. Is this suitable for some button quails?
    2. How many could I fit in there?
    3. What's the deal with the sexes? (1 male to 2 females?, Dominant male? etc)
    4. Would quail sit and lay eggs in open top boxes?
    5. Are homemade incuabtors any good?
    6. If so what is the temperature and any other special things I need to know?

Thanks, all answers will be appreciated.

    • ANSWER:
      That's a lot of questions.
First of all, yes it's suitable for button quail.
I would say 1 male and 3 females max. Do not get more than one male, though.
The three hens are necessary so he doesn't consistently chase after and harass any one single hen.
They don't need open top boxes - put some dense plants inside if you can (like a dense grass in one corner that they can get in or behind) and that is how they will be happiest.
Otherwise, you can try putting a 8x8 open front box in one corner with some shavings/down inside. They might use that.
They're a bit tricky to breed because they really do not like artificial settings. The more foliage you put inside, the better.
Even if you just drape fake plants on the outside of the enclosure it will help them.
I've never used a homemade incubator - I had a forced air hova-bator with an automatic egg turner, though, and I liked it a lot. So even if you can't get your quail to sit on their own eggs, you could use something like that. Though, I would ask.. where would you plan on keeping the young? That size enclosure is only good for max 4 quail. SImply because they can be aggressive/territorial towards one another and like any other bird they need room to run around. Plus - not sure if you've ever owned them or not but their poop is very, very... verrrryyy stinky if you let it build up.
Hopefully your enclosure has a way to clean out the droppings, or else move it around so they don't build up in any one place.

  42. QUESTION:
Do you think that bathing a cat is wrong?
My boyfriend and I bathe his cats once in a while. Like maybe once a month the most. But we have reasons for it.

First, I'm allergic to cat dander. So when I'm at his house, a clean cat helps me not get allergy attacks.

Second, his first cat is a long haired indoor cat, and she grooms herself way too much. That causes her fur to mat up all the time. So we always have to brush her out and bathe her to get all the crap out of her fur.

Third, the other cat is an outdoor cat who for some reason enjoys rolling in dirt. She'll come waltzing back into the house, and when you pat her, there will be dust going everywhere lol. Also, she'll start to smell like a dirty dog after a while. So it's pretty gross.

But yeah. I think that as long as there is a good reason behind it, bathing cats is okay. But it's wrong to do it for no reason or just for amusement.

    What do you think?
Well I also agree that giving a cat a bath can be overly stressful to the cat. And if it is then you shouldn't do that. Cuz I am aware of the dangers of doing that.

But with my boyfriends cats, as long as the water isn't running they won't freak out, scream, or try to run away. I think it's the noise that scares them. Cuz if they just sit there in the warm water they will be calm. So I think it's fine.

Also, to "madcowbutcher", they're not MY cats. They're my boyfriends cats. I didn't make the decision to have them around. Read before you say anything stupid.
