Caring For Oak Dining Tables
Like any other oak furniture, oak dining tables require regular care. Oak furniture care simply ensures that the furniture lasts for a longer period of time. Only a few simple steps and normal check ups will ensure that your dining tables remain in good shape for generations to come Oak dining tables are made of solid or ‘living’ wood. The fact that the wood lives like human beings is obvious that cold, heat, dampness and dryness will have diverse effects on the dining tables. The first care tip for oak dining tables therefore is to avoid as much as possible such extremes. For instance, if you placed oak furniture in direct sunlight, it is obviously going to fade or weaken the polished finish. Thanks to technology, waxing in not part of today’s oak furniture care because most of the oak furniture feature a protective soft-sheen finish. However, since people spent a lot of time on dining tables, and a lot of people relish the feel and smell of waxed furniture, it wouldn’t cause any harm if you waxed oak dining tables. Equally, if it is a must you apply polish, it is advisable that you do it utmost three times a year, using the polish carefully on soft pieces of cloths. Select the best qualities in the market for furniture wax polish and always apply and beige off the wax towards the grain to get best effects. Dining tables are prone to water marks, heat marks and moisture rings. Incase of any of these simply massage some margarine or butter on the affected area and leave untouched overnight, or for several hours. You can then wipe clean and apply polish to maintain the characteristic gleam of oak dining tables. If you experience more stubborn stains, simply make a paste of olive oil and cigarette ash, then massage evenly on the affected area. For best results, leave it overnight and wipe clean after the stain disappears. To give back the luster and shine of your dining table, apply good quality polish immediately after wiping off the paste. Incase there are minor burn marks on your oak dining table, simply massage toothpaste evenly on the damaged area or grain then wipe clean and apply polish. If the burns have created pronounced marks, make a paste of vegetable oil and powdered pumice and apply evenly along the grain, treating only the affected area, then wiping off and polishing as usual. Dining room furniture is susceptible to a lot of scratches and dents, just like their living room furniture counterparts. A lot of dents are as a result of dropped objects which can basically be repaired by soaking the affected area into water for one minute. This allows water to get into the wood. Incase the affected area is sealed off, prick using a pin to allow water soak inside where you can re-wax after the repair. After a minute, place a ball of soft piece of cotton cloth on the dent and gently iron the area using the normal iron.

Piece Dining Table Q&A
Where online can I find a cheap dining room table?
I have been looking online and I have found a few. Most of the ones i've found you have to buy the table and chairs separate. I'm looking for a 5 or 7 piece dining room table around $150 or less.
I have been to ebay and there are no cheap tables and you have to pick them up and I'm not driving cross country to pick one up.
I live in North Georgia so if you know of anything near me that would help.
go to ebay
We are planning to make a dining room table out of an old wooden door.....?
Like a front door to a house. What is the best kind of paint for that? Is there any way to seal it with something to protect the designs or pictures on the table, or would we have to buy a piece of glass to attach to the top to protect it?
We are going to section the table off into 5 sections and have each member of the family paint there own picture or designs. We would like to cut the legs off the table so that it is very low to the floor and sew pillows for everyone's place around the table. How would we go about doing that?
As you can tell we are amateurs here at the moment.
You can use latex paint from the big hardware store to cover the door. Then each person could use acrylic craft paints from the craft/hobby store to make their designs. Then cover the artwork with a non-yellowing water based polyurethane to protect it. Put on at least two coats. Follow the directions on the can about drying and sanding between coats.
The legs you can buy at the big hardware stores. You should be able to buy coffee table sized legs. They sell brackets that the legs screw into. You attach the bracket with screws to the table then the legs just screw into the brackets. It is pretty easy to make anything into a table with these.
Pillows are easy to make - you just sew a square of the desired size with the fabric wrong side out, leaving part of one end open. Turn it right side out, stuff with polyfill and hand stitch the opening closed.
Good luck with all your projects.
