And then there are the advantages of shopping online in general: the ability to browse; easy comparison shopping; coming back as often as you need, without pressure from salespeople. It’s all part of the experience.

What to Look for Online

A good online retractable awning assembler is an expert on retractable awningss, and they will make as much information available about their product as possible. When deciding what retractable awnings to purchase, first look for quality:

Retractable Awning Q&A

Would you recommend an awning as a patio cover?

I'm looking at the "Sunset Retractable Awning". Two other alternatives are: (i) build a cover made from a wooden frame; (ii) get a huge patio umbrella!

I've done all three and right now have a wooden patio cover over half of the patio and a series of umbrellas on the other. Awnings have come a long way as most are constructed of Sunbrella fabric which neither fades, mildews or molds. But, unless you get the remote controlled retraction device, they do take a little effort to manipulate. Also, the device that holds them up on each side takes up some valuable real estate on the patio and will redirect traffic around them. Further, we live in an area prone to very high winds and found them unable to handle our Santa Anas without damage. At least with the permanent structure, we don't worry so much about it ripping off the house, damaging our patio furniture or having to run out there and crank it down during high winds. I have been know to chase down one of the umbrellas that go airborne, however...

Can an retractable awning be painted?

I absolutely hate the color of our awning. It came with the house when we bought it and I thought it may be cheaper to paint it than replace it. It is a canvas type material. Has anyone tried this? What type of paint did you use? How did it look?

It probably can be painted but will require a special paint. Go to an RV dealership, or a Camping World. Just about all RVs have a retractable awning (mine does) and that community should certainly know if you can and what type of paint should be used. It may be cheaper to just replace the fabric.
