Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
    shag rug???
i have a camel color shag rug. it's been through a lot this summer and i want to know what is the best (and easiest) way to clean it? I don't have a carpet cleaner, so i will be doing most of it by hand.

thanks in advance to everyone who answers!

    • ANSWER:
3 caps fulls vinegar, 3 caps fulls Windex,2 cups Woolite hand wash liquid detergent mix to together and wash carpet and let dry the particles will easily come up when vacuuming carpet. Plus this will not stain carpets.

  2. QUESTION:
    washing small shag area rug?
I have a VERY small off-white shag area rug, it's only maybe 4'x2.5'. it has that like, rubbery backing on the bottom. is it ok to throw it in the washer, and let it air dry? I think putting it in the dryer would lose the shag effect, make the fibers clump or something. but it's under a coffee table, and the edges of it are getting very dirty. can i wash it? there's no tag underneath with cleaning instructions.

    • ANSWER:
We have three of these in a bathroom, and my wife washes them in the washer and dries them in the dryer. So far, no problems with the backing coming off. And, we've had them for years. Some are built better than others. I would try it. But, I would expect the backing to start coming off and be ready to replace it if that happens.

  3. QUESTION:
i was thinking about buying a shag rug for my den. I have a Dachshund that sheds and was wondering ...?
if that kind of rug collects a lot of hair and is hard to vacuum.

    • ANSWER:
I don't have one, but I have the same problem - dogs. I really wanted a shag rug but decided against it because I was told it was hard to clean and impossible to vacuum properly.

  4. QUESTION:
How do you get dog wee out of a very thick shag pile rug?
I have already shampooed the rug with a scrubbing brush on both sides, hosed it out & left it to dry hanging over my fence in 40+ degree hot adelaide weather.
It still smells very strongly of dog piss!
How can I get rid of the smell?
I've also tried "Febreeze" & "Amway" carpet shampooer
I should also add that I have a 19month old little girl so the process needs to kill the bacteria too
I should also add that a have a 19 month old little girl who will want to lay on the rug so the process needs to kill all the bacteria from the wee

    • ANSWER:
You need to spray to rug with a solution of 25% vinegar to 75% water
to neutralize the smell of pet urine.

  5. QUESTION:
    Cleaning a shag rug?
I just purchased a new shag rug and noticed some shedding, little pieces here and there. Is that normal? And can you vacuum this rug? I'm afraid that the vacuum might pull some the hairs out.

    • ANSWER:
Some shedding is normal. You can vacuum this rug, but only if you can adjust the height of the beater bar. If you vacuum the rug with the beater bar in close contact with the fiber, it will "bloom".

If you notice excessive shedding or bald spots, return the rug to the store immediately. It doesn't happen often, but the rug might have a defective weave.

      Good luck!

  6. QUESTION:
Anyone know the best shag area rug to purchase..I've heard wool shed too much. How about nylon or acrylic?

Thank you for your answers....good job!

    • ANSWER:
100% nylon is your best overall bet. Almost (almost) impossible to wear out nylon. Now the flip side.. Your stain protection is good on the nylons. But the acrylics and polyesters are natural stain blockers in it. The fibers are softer in these other fibers though.. You make the call as to you know where your putting this rug. GL

  7. QUESTION:
    DIY Faux Fur Shag Rug?
Is it possible to make a shag rug for a bedroom out of that faux fur you see in fabric stores? If so, whats the best way to go about it? I was just going to get a yard or so and put some no-slip mat under it but maybe there are better ideas? Is there any reason this is a bad idea? Let me know.

    Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
Certainly it's possible and not at all difficult.

I don't condone even faux animal hides/shapes for rugs, but if you have it in mind just think of a shape and cut the fabric/shape, with a decent shear.

The fabric sold as is,,,is designed as fabric, not carpet material and won't pull or shred like the weave of carpet often does when sheared. It's usually a Polyester, and matted on the back. I've used in for Theater, for years. It isn't strictly as durable as carpet material, but depending on its use and abuse it should be OK.

Without knowing at all what animal or pattern you have in mind; a yard seems small; unless perhaps it's sold in 4/5/6 ft. widths?

Certainly Joannes and other fabric stores carry varieties from bear type to Zebra, leopard, etc.

Also the no slip is advised, but if you plan on having it in place for awhile there is also a mesh double sided tape specific to carpet that might work as well.

Is it ok to scrub down a shag rug with soap, then let it air dry?

    • ANSWER:
rinse or it will be slippery and attract more dirt.

  10. QUESTION:
Does anyone have any tips on how to vacuum a shag rug? Nothing is working! Any hints or tips would be great!?
Nothing is working! We have no idea how to clean it. Any suggestions?
    Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
Set your vacuum on the highest pile setting, the one that sets the brushes the furthest from the floor. If your vacuum does not come with different settings, make the best of the setting you’re forced to use.

Vacuum away. Shag works best with short, back and forth motions to pull the pile up as much as possible and avoid the vacuum getting stuck and smelling like it's about to burst into flames. Work your way with the vacuum left to right across the floor and, for good measure, go back over it in the perpendicular direction.

Disconnect the vacuum hose and use the open tube to suck up dirt. Place the hose’s nozzle straight down into the carpet, methodically covering the entire area. This is a lengthy process but you will be amazed at how much dirt, grime and other disgusting stuff you are able to extract from the shag when you sit down and really concentrate. This does not have to be done often unless your carpet gets very heavy wear. A couple of times each year should do the trick.

  11. QUESTION:
What's the best way to get dried in blood off a shag pile rug?

Hello Sara, First wet the rug with a little water . then add salt. leave like this for 5 min´s . then blot with kitchen roll remember cold water never add heat or you´ll never get it out carry on doing this still you are happy the stain is out. once you are happy use some of your own hair shampoo to clean a little rinse of soap suds ,if the rug it not to big you can roll it up in a big bath towel this will help to dry it quicker , but better to dry in the fresh air . don´t dry with your hair dryer to up the drying natural air is best

  12. QUESTION:

  13. QUESTION:
    Problems with my shag rug...?
I have a shag rug in my room. It's right infront of my mirror where I brush my hair, so now there is always hair caught in the shags of the rug. Also, dog hair gets caught in it from my dog. Vacumming doesn't get the hair out.
How do you clean a shag rug? I need to get the hair out of it!
    Help!

    • ANSWER:
I suggest...brushing it/raking it. Sounds weird but back in the 70's when shag rug was in, raking was introduced to the carpets. If you rake it, it combs the direction of the carpet, but also pulls materials in from deep within the carpet. If this doesn't work...try a lint brush with teeth. Not a roller that picks up sticky stuff.
