Is there an easy way to clean pet hair from a shag rug?
I have two orange cats and a burgundy shag area rug. Needless to say, their hair gets all over the rug. My vacuum doesn't pick up the hair and the only way I've been able to clean it is by running my fingers through the whole thing to get the hair out. Is there an easier way? 6. QUESTION:
    Any opinions on Shag Rugs?!?
I am considering buying a new Shag Rug for my livingroom... How durable are they? Are they worth the trouble of cleaning them? Any suggestions for a good company to buy them from?

    Any cleaning tips?!

    Thank you all!!

    • ANSWER:
You might consider a frieze rather than the old fashioned shag, and definitely buy the best quality nylon. Don't even consider the "pop bottle" carpets for a living area. They're horrible for matting - good for color retention and stain resistance but they are more suitable for low traffic areas. Buy a dense pile and a good quality pad - don't just go with the free pad sometimes included with the carpet. I'd suggest talking to an interior decorator - if they've been in business awhile they have good contacts and can negotiate a good price, be careful with large chains and big box stores, their attraction is convenience, and not necessarily quality when it comes to carpets.

  7. QUESTION:
does shag area rugs look good on berber carpet?

    • ANSWER:
area rugs on top of carpet? this should be ok if area rug is contrasting in color. this is a way to add color, and to divide space in an open floorplan. one concern is that sometimes area rugs placed on carpet tend to bunch up, there is a product at carpet padding suppliers that is a sticker for area rugs on top of carpet.

  8. QUESTION:
Are wall to wall shag rugs easy to clean, or will they clog my vacuum?

    • ANSWER:
I don't know about wall-to-wall but I had a large shag area rug that was a nightmare! Not only did it clog up the vacuum, it was almost entirely impossible to get it really clean because it caught dirt and wouldn't let go. It wasn't a cheap rug, it was a Mahdavis high end brand but I couldn't wait to get rid of it!

  9. QUESTION:
Whats the best way to clean a shag pile rug?
My very cute but naughty puppy did a couple of pees on my shag pile rug. Now I have a slight smell. How would be the best way to clean it? I have heard that carpet cleaners wont clean shag pile rugs!

    • ANSWER:
Once you clean it spray some fabric softener on the spots to get rid of the smell...

Try a rug doctor carpet cleaner

  13. QUESTION:
How to clean a leather shag rug?
My dog threw up on my leather shag rug, HELP!

  14. QUESTION:
how do i rejuvinate my shag rug?
i have had a shag rug for more than a year and the area my kids love to sit it is all smooshed down.....even when i vaccuum...The area under my coffe table is like it used to be when i vaccuum. how can i make it pop back up like it used to?

    • ANSWER:
Vacuums can pick up all the loose dirt, but some of it gets matted into the carpet fibers and eventually weighs them down. Rent a steam cleaner or rug shampooer or have a professional company do it for you and you will be amazed at the results. Carpet should be cleaned once a year or every other year depending on the traffic they get - sounds like yours needs it once a year.

  15. QUESTION:
How can I clean dog urine off of a shag rug?
My dogs are still not fully housetrained and they continue to mess on our shag rug. I've heard that vinegar neutralizes the odor but what is the best way to use it, especially when I can't tell where exactly the stain is?

    • ANSWER:
Use a black light to identify the soiled areas, then treat them with a cleaner with enzymes (Petzyme is a good, reasonably-priced one). Follow directions exactly. You may need to treat more than once because of the texture of the carpet and the repeated soiling.

And enzymatic cleaner will work more effectively than vinegar and smell a hell of a lot better, too. To prevent future soiling do not allow the dogs out of their crate or confined area when you cannot constantly supervise. Outdated, inhumane methods like hitting, yelling, or rubbing their nose in a mess will only slow down their house training and create other problems. (Punish yourself when you find accidents because it is your fault, not theirs, for failing to contain and supervise.)

  16. QUESTION:
Is there a place to buy a white shag rug in Toronto?
I am looking for a white shag rug for my room but haven't been able to find one anywhere. Does anyone know where they sell them?

    • ANSWER:

  17. QUESTION:
Update a room with a brown shag rug?
I just looked at a fantastic apartment...but it has this horrible brown shag rug in the main room! It just looks way too retro and reminds me of my grandparent's basement rec. room. The landlord said the apartment could be painted (it would have to be painted back when we left) and right now the walls are all white.

What can I do to bring this room into 2007? I was thinking of a nice brown accent wall, or even painting the window trim....any ideas are welcomed!

    • ANSWER:
I think shags are in style again. I saw on HGTV the decorator put a brand spanking new shag rug in an apartment.
      Love your shag rug!
Go native with safari-feel khaki or sand colored walls, heavy dark accessories, and plenty of lighter tan colors to balance such as pillows, etc. Chocolate curtains with tan sheers in between. That's what I see for your room. Be sure and put in a great big green plant or two. Don't get so jungle-y that it looks artificial, but do hang an old looking world map on one wall and maybe a nice little jute or other sisal rug under your coffee table to define your conversation area. Don't forget a few punches of bold color such as red in some of your accessories and a few of your pillows. Think of parrots, bright and bold.
      sounds like fun to me!!

  18. QUESTION:
can you dry clean a shag rug?
I have a cat that decided to pee on my daughters shag rug in her room, and I tried a disinfectant cleaner.......then white vinegar and water....It didnt work, and now it stinks like pee and vinegar..eek. so my q. is this: can a dry cleaner clean this? I just dont want to throw away a perfectly good rug if it can be cleaned.

    • ANSWER:
I think you could dry clean but before you do go to your local Sam's club and purchase some ODA BAN. It comes in a gallon jug with a spray bottle attached. I don't know how big the rug is but either spray it down good or soak it in (a mixture of water and ODA BAN) and let it set outside. I think you will see a BIG difference in the rug. It works wonders.

  19. QUESTION:
Why are rainbow vacuums bad for some rugs?
a friend heard from a rug dealer that rainbow vacuums were not good to use on shag rugs, but she was in a hurry and never asked why.

    • ANSWER:
I've had a rainbow vac. for 20 Years, and my mother in law for a least 50 years. It's a great vacuum, I also had shag rug. So someone is just trying to get you to buy their brand. If you want a Rainbow GO FOR IT. It's great for allergies, and air born pollen don't talked out if this. They are FANTASTIC.

  20. QUESTION:
Where do you find super tacky faux shag/fur rugs?
I'm wanting to buy a huge super furry rug. I'm not sure what they are called, which is part of why I'm having trouble shopping for one. I've seen them at places like Walmart as smaller "funky" bath mats.. but I'm wanting something bigger and I can't figure out what to call the material they are made out of, or where to find one of these...

I'm not looking for an actual shag rug... I'm talking about super furry/hairy material.. (think Sully from Monsters Inc)

Anyone have an information for me?

    • ANSWER:
      IKEA!

  21. QUESTION:
I'm thinking about ordering a shag rug for my living room. Are they hard to clean?
It's the benson shag rug from pottery barn

    • ANSWER:
They are a bit hard. You have to vacuum the snot out of them and they are notorious for hiding things like coins and small toys. I have a shag area rug and I hate it every time I have to vacuum it, but then I love it when it is done. Nothing feels better on bare feet. Therefore, if you don't mind vacuuming it often then go for it.

  22. QUESTION:
I have royal blue living room walls w/white trim. Would a brown leather couch and red shag rug clash?
My walls are a royal blue with white trim. We have a light colored hardwood floor and were thinking about getting a dark brown leather sofa with nailhead trim. I am also eyeing a red shag rug to throw into the mix. It's not a bright bright red but not burgundy either. I was thinking about bringing these three colors together but don't know if it will clash. If it doesn't, where would I begin with curtains?? Solids, stripes, dots?? I want long curtains and my husband wants more of a cabin theme but I'm not sure that will work with this color scheme. Any help is appreciated.

    • ANSWER:
The brown sofa would be fine, the red rug wouldn't go. I think the blue and the red together would clash.

  23. QUESTION:

  24. QUESTION:
Can very long shag rug be cleaned with a professional steam cleaner?
    http://www.justshagrugs.com/The-Rug-Market-02206-TU1191.html

I'm thinking of buying a shag rug similar to this type. I have 2 boys and a dog...so it will need to be steam cleaned every now and then. I'm wondering if those are cleanable with professional steam cleaners, or if the sucking action will tear up the rug. Figured it would be good to find out before I buy one! Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
this information came from the care instructions on the link you provided:

      Recommended Care:

•Professional rug cleaning or hand wash in cold water
•Hang or lay flat to dry
•Flip over and vacuum on the back side
•Rug pad is recommended under all rugs to avoid skidding
•Due to the hand made nature of the rugs, colors and sizes will vary slightly

Because this is a hand made rug and costly, I myself would not use a steam cleaning machine on it.

  25. QUESTION:
    Are shag rugs in style?

How do you clean a Shag Rug?
Its really cute but it's getting dirty.
    Its medium-sized.
    The rug size: 8 x 10

Rent or borrow a steam cleaner/extractor. They are as easy to use as a vacuum. After cleaning, it will take a few hours to dry properly, so don't walk on it unless you really need to, and then only with bare feet. The steam cleaners can be rented from many sources for under for the day. I suggest you google your city for a dealer.

  40. QUESTION:
How do I get a puppy urine smell out of my shag area rug?
I have tried rug cleaning sprays and powders and vacummed it many times. I don't know what else to do and don't want to replace my rug!

    • ANSWER:
      Puppies did it again hahaha!
Sorry to laugh about your problem, but it's such a common issue ;o)

No worries, it's not the end of your rug at all...
I would suggest having it cleaned by a professional area rug cleaner, as they can get a lot more stains, smells and dirt out then you ever will be able at home, but this might help:
Try cleaning it with warm water & detergent then white vinegar & water (deluted 1:3)...
      You'll be supprised!
Do not use over-the-counter chemicals, as those can absolutely damage your area rug, resulting in the need of a much more expensive rug repair service.

To give you a little "heads-up" with stains, I have copied and pasted an article that I had on my old website in here for you.
Hopefully it will come in handy some day ;o)
      -------------------

      Removing Stains:
Many rugs are treated to be stain resistant which delays the stain setting in, giving you a chance to act. The key is to treat the stain or spill quickly before it is absorbed by the rug and dries. Basic cleaning steps for typical everyday stains:
      1. Scoop up as much of the spill as possible
      2. Absorb as much of the liquid that's left with a dry cloth/paper towel by blotting.
      3. Apply warm water to the stain then blot again If the stain remains visible, mix warm water with a mild non-bleach laundry detergent.
Using a clean cloth apply some of the mixture to the stain and let it soak for 5 minutes.
Rinse the stain with warm water and blot it well to extract the residue. Repeat until there is no detergent on the rug. When satisfied and the rug is completely dry, vacuum the area.

      Specific Stains:
Since different stains require different cleaning treatments, it is important to identify the source and nature of the stain. Below is a list of common stains and how they are best removed.

      --- Stain - Cleaning Treatment ----

Alcohol - Warm water & detergent

Asphalt - Dry cleaning solvent then warm water & detergent

Blood - Warm water & detergent

Butter - Dry cleaning solvent then warm water & detergent

Chewing gum - Freeze using ice, shatter gum, vacuum, warm water & detergent

Most Makeup - Dry cleaning solvent then warm water & detergent

Shoe Polish - Dry cleaning solvent then warm water & detergent

Urine - Warm water & detergent then white vinegar & water (1:3)

Vomit - Warm water & detergent then dry cleaning solvent

Wax - Freeze using ice, shatter gum, vacuum, dry cleaning solvent then water & detergent

Wine - Talcum powder then warm water & detergent
