The Amish Tradition of Handcrafted Furniture

There is a reason why Amish made furniture is so highly prized and valued by people; especially people with an eye for quality craftsmanship. That reason is the traditional method utilized to make Amish handcrafted furniture. The Amish people are some of very few communities that still adhere to an old fashioned way of life, choosing to eschew modern comforts and conveniences and preferring instead to do things the old fashioned way, the way that makes Amish furniture life literally for generations. Amish furniture is to modern furniture what gourmet cooking is to frozen TV dinners! While the latter will do the job, it imparts no pleasure and aesthetic satisfaction to the senses, nor the conviction that this is the best you can get!

And indeed Amish handcrafted furniture is among the best quality furniture that is made today. It is made in a way very distinct from the soulless, mass produced furniture that we see so much of, which is wholly lacking in character. The material used to make Amish furniture is also very different from other modern furniture; the Amish craftsmen use only genuine hard wood which grows slowly and is consequently extremely durable and long lasting. They make no use of particle board, or ply or other artificially prepared raw materials for their furniture. This is the reason that Amish furniture made today gives the appearance of furniture that may have been made a hundred years ago. Also since these styles of furniture never go out of style, they become family heirlooms to be passed on from generation to generation.

Amish furniture is made while paying a lot of attention to each individual item of furniture and it is also this largely non-automated procedure used to make this furniture that makes it so durable and beautiful. Traditionally the Amish minimize use of electrical appliances and so the tools that they use to make the furniture are also usually not mechanized; rather they are hydraulic or pneumatic. Plus there is a lot of attention paid to individual details of each item of furniture and the finishing and polishing of each item is always done painstakingly by hand.

Amish made furniture is not just about items of furniture around the house. The Amish are also skilled in crafting home accessories, lawn and garden ornaments, gazebos, play houses, outdoor furniture and even wooden toys! Imagine beautiful, traditional toys handcrafted for a child; such as farm toys, trains and planes, puzzles and games, dollhouse furniture and more! A far cry from generic cheap plastic toys that flood the market today! These are the kinds of toys that a child would treasure for their very uniqueness. Also imagine if you will, some unusual even whimsical touches to your home and garden: fruit baskets, chopping boards, wooden chests, wall décor, hooks and hangers, pretty much anything, or perhaps a beautiful, customized gazebo for your garden or lawn furniture like gliders, rockers, chairs, swings, tables and footstools, bridges and arbors that could grace the most elegant garden.

Amish furniture prove the old adage, A Thing of Beauty is a Joy Forever!

Swing Amish Q&A

How will the Amish vote?

The Amish are a people that do not believe in electricity. They are generally conservative and I'd imagine would vote Republican. Without normal voting booths will there be an issue of "hanging chads" in their voter area? Is that even their method of voting? Could this end up being a controversy in states like PA because of its swing-state status?

I don't think th eAmish vote so it's a non-issue. IF they did vote though. You believe taht Harrison Ford would get many rite in votes.

I am an Amish teenager and I need some help about a non-Amish girl?

First of all, I am on my non-Amish neighbor's computer. I know this is wrong, but I really wanted help and he said y'all had good advice.

Today I was working on my family's farm and a group drove up. I didn't pay much attention, I'm used to people dropping by to buy swings or jellies. I noticed a girl about my age (I'm 15), and she was the most beautiful girl ever. She was wearing these really short pants. I felt bad looking at her like that, but I couldn't help it. I kept smiling at her as she looked around our farm, she looked happy, but I don't know. Later tonight my dad apologized to my brothers and I for having to see a girl dressed like that and that she was indecent, so he already doesn't like her. If she ever comes back, what should I do? Do you think she would ever come back? Could I get her to convert to Amish?

First off if you are a teen you are ok using a computer since both New Order & Old Order Amish allow their teens to have rumspringa. So I'm sure you won't get in trouble using your Mennonite neighbors computer. This is expected of teens.

True 15 is a little early. It is usually at 16 not 15. So speak to your bishop about it.

I'm sure your Dat (Amish children usually call their Fathers either Father or Dat)noticed this because since you are a boy & were out working with him.

Now if your family women sell home grown goods they are use to strangers aka Englishers dropping by wearing all kinds of clothes. So I'm confused why your Dat apologized. That would be humbling himself to the English behavoior. Most Amish men would NEVER do that.

It is rare for Englishers to convert to Amish.

During your rumspringa you will meet more Englishers & Amish girls from other districts during local & area singings which are often held every other Sunday on a NON-CHURCH week. I'm sure you are aware of this too.

Edit - also honey if you are using Rosetta Stone to learn languages you are using computers. You posted 2mts ago about using Rosetta Stone . We use it a lot in our homeschool. http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Any0qtiBRQ2iK3N5eXTRHFPty6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20110424135142AAQ9J1R Most Amish bishops would not allow learning different languages. Most Amish kids & teens do not learn German until after they are baptisted into the church.

Also according to you "Is it okay that I have a German lover, but I live in America?" - I guess you forgot but since you are Amish you are clearly German. The Amish are a German group.
