Wood Patio Furniture Care Made Easy
Spring and summer is the time of year that people get their grills out and dust off the patio furniture so that they can entertain outdoors in the warm weather. Some people like to go with plastic patio furniture where others like the look and feel of wood patio furniture. If you have your patio adorned with wooden furniture it is important to know how to care for it so it can withstand the weather. Below are some basic tips on caring for wood patio furniture to help you keep it looking its best so it will last you for years to come.
Wood furniture requires a bit of maintenance each season so it will keep its shape and look. Caring for your furniture is simple and takes just a bit of your time but it really pays off in the end. The first thing you need to do is make sure it has a sealant on it to weather proof it. This will help to keep the wood from soaking up water as it beads up and rolls off when it is sealed. It is protection from Mother Nature and it is well worth it.
It is important that when you take out your patio furniture for the season that you check it over thoroughly. You are looking for damaged or rough spots that will need to be sanded out and have sealant reapplied. You can do this with fine sand paper, sanding the rough spots until nice and smooth. This prepares it for the sealant and also helps to protect those that sit upon it, keeping them safe from splinters and tearing their clothes on rough spots in the wood.
When the summer is over you will want to store your patio furniture away until the next spring so that it will stay safe from the winter weather. Keeping it out in the cold weather can lead to the wood breaking down and cracking or splitting. The weather can also be hard on your weather sealant so by storing the patio furniture you save money as you will have to use less weather sealant each year. It is recommended that you reseal the wood furniture at least once every 3 to 5 years with spot sealing done yearly as needed.
If you have wood furniture that is made from logs, you may have trouble sealing it so you will need to have covers to put over the furniture while it is kept outside for the spring and summer months. If you have the space, you can pull the furniture inside when the weather gets wet outside. By following these simple tips you will find that your wood patio furniture will be around for years to come. It takes just a few moments of your time and it will save you money in the long run.

Wood Patio Furniture Q&A
Could a stained wood table be okay outdoors? Would it be weather proof to use as patio furniture?
unless polyurethaned or sealed
I wouldnt use it in the elements
Can I put an iron wine bottle rack with glass outside the house?
A while back, I bought a beautiful iron bottle rack wine bar holder at an auction at a very high end furniture store. I think it is about 2 1/2 to 3 feet in height and about 3 1/2 in length. Its all in black and has beautiful grapes and leaves but all in iron. A glass sits on top of the rack for wine glasses. It just does not match the inside of our NEW house. I was thinking about taking it out side under a wood porch. I will REALLY match the black patio table. I just don't know if it will rust and wonder if I should pray it with some kind of protection. Any suggestions?
I restore and refurbish wrought and cast iron with lots of it in my yard and on my outdoor patios and living spaces. It won't rust if you use the correct paint, like Rustoleum Ultimate, to protect it. the new paints are specifically formulated now to encapsulate existing rust and protect metals from starting to rust in the first place. Just know, keeping glass clean outside is more of a constant task than when you have it indoors. But, give all of the metal surfaces a coat of one of the rust protecting sprays available at the home improvement ceneters and it should do fine. The only one I do not recommend is Hammerite because I have had problems with iron I painted and sealed with it bubbling, flaking and rusting.
