Cover Up With Green Tarps

Are you just not satisfied with how your blue tarp works? It could be that you need to buy a green tarp instead. Blue tarps are good for emergencies and shade covers, but for heavier jobs the green tarps do the better job. Green tarps are made in a wide array of sizes and have special qualities that enable them to be used in a vast array of possibilities.

Green tarps are more durable than blue tarps. This is because they are manufactured from a heavier plastic. This helps them hold up over time. They do not wear out as fast as the blue tarps do. You can lengthen even their time with proper care. The green tarps usual life span is between 6 to 12 months a lot longer than the blue ones.

These tarps are usually manufactured from polyethylene. Plastic for tarps are normally gauged in a measurement of ounces. Green tarps use the gauge of 6 ounces. This is extremely durable and still has a good flexibility. Blue tarps are normally only about 3 ounces. This means that green tarps are twice as strong as the blues.

In addition the green tarps contain a coating on them. This makes the green tarps come out ahead of the blue ones, in the fact, that they stand up a year or more without getting sun rot like the blues do. Numerous of the green ones are sold with warranties good for 3 years on their durability and sun protection. They can withstand bad weather and strong winds too. This means you can feel confident using them for a covering in the back of you pickup truck, or as a covering in your backyard, these will hold up under any kind of weather conditions.

Green tarps are equipped with twice as many grommets as the blue because their grommets are spaced 18 inches apart opposed to 36 inches apart like the blues. This enables them to be secured down much firmer whether to your load, vehicle, or the ground. You can have more tie down spots and not as much stress on one given edge because the tension is more evenly distributed around the outside of the tarp.

The coating that the green tarp is covered with makes is completely waterproof. This coating is on both sides of the tarp. You can keep you and your load completely dry with it. You can place this tarp on the wet ground so that you can place your tent on top of it. You will stay nice and dry in your tent. Wood piles will not get wet whether it be logs for fires or construction lumber. Whatever you have to cover with these green tarps, it will not get wet as long as you make sure it it totally covered.

The color green also makes the tarp blend in with nature, in case you dwell out in the country. So if you are trying to have shade or cover a roof with it, it will not stand out that much. The green color can be eye pleasing for other types of applications too. The bright blue of the other tarps can stand out vividly on the hand.

Green tarps are more worth the money because of them being waterproof, sun rot proof, rip resistance, and more inconspicuous to use. They also last many times longer, which means less replacing them, this saves you a lot of money that you can spend on other things. The many blue tarps out there are super detrimental to the environment, with them having to be thrown away more often. So purchasing the more economical, heavier duty, and more environmentally friendly green tarps is a smart thing to do.

Tarp Tent Q&A

Mountain Backpacking: Tent or Tarp?

I'd rather not buy a new tent at the moment, should I haul in my rather lightweight 2 person Kelty Streamside tent or bring the heavier, warmer mummy bag and sleep under a tarp? Backpacking in mountains, Wyoming, for 5-7 days. Light snow in summer. But I'm from the north, can deal with it. Bag rated at -35.
Yeah, I've got a few different bags. The warmest is that extreme weather, military surplus bag. I've got a nice, light 15 or 20 degree mummy-style. I seem to be missing my nicer mummy bag. :(
Wow, didn't realize the tent was that heavy... I may check around some surplus shops and craigslist, see what I can find. Or just spend the 60 bucks on a small Eureka.

Since the Kelty Steamside weights in at 6 pound 3 ounces, I think I would opt for the tarp and a warmer bag. That is a lot of weight for a 2 person backpacking tent.

How do you know what size tarp to buy for over your tent?

I have a 10'x12' tent and I am trying to buy a tarp to go over it to protect it from the rain and sun. I am not sure how much larger I should go. Please help :)

Well obviously the smallest tarp you want is 12'x12'. I`d say go with at least a 15'x15' tarp. If the tent is decent and has a good fly you shouldnt need a tarp. but personally if you really need it go with a 20'x20' this way you have a small place to sit under and stay dry. Sort of like a porch area.

There is no need to do all that math and measuring, you know the tent is 10'x12' thats all you need, you`re not having a custom tarp created.
