Why Shade Sails Are the Must Have Item for A Summer Garden

Let's face it:  parasols are boring.  They never cover a big enough area to shade more than two people; they flap; they break; and they can't be used in any position other than up on the end of a flimsy stick. No – the new thing in garden shading is coming to the UK, in the form of shade sails: spectacular, sculpture-like edifices that can perform any outdoor function a person can imagine.

Shade Sails are made from scientifically developed material called shade cloth – a tough canvas like fabric impregnated with both weather proofing and UV protection. The average UV protection of shade sails comes in at around 85%, which makes them suitable for preventing burning on all but the fairest skin in heat way higher than we are ever likely to see in the UK. When you consider that Factor 85 is probably good enough for most people in the tropics, where a walk to the shops can give you crippling sun poisoning, you'll understand that shade sails offer a level of protection that makes a parasol look like a sun bed.

Shade sails can be cut to any shape or size, which means they are ideal for all outdoor purposes. Shade sails can be used to cover driveways and paths; they can cover all or part of a patio; or they can make roof like areas for what effectively become outdoor dining rooms. Shade sails can be strung together in attractive groups to form staggered or larger shading areas; they can be attached to the sides of buildings or strung between poles. And because shade sails are stiff (the treatments they are impregnated with make them tough and solid), they retain an attractive shape reminiscent of a schooner setting out to sea – hence the name.

Shade sails give as much protection from rain and wind as they do from sun. That makes them ideal installations – and they look so good "installations" is definitely the right word – for the British climate, which gets as much of the first two as it does of the third. Shade sails are meant to be permanent additions to the outside space, rather than the flimsy temporary furniture we tend to stock our gardens with. As such, they work all year round and are actually designed to enhance the look of one's outdoor areas.

Shade sails give an almost "art gallery" feel to a garden. The pale rigid shapes of the sails seem to levitate above greens and floral pastels, making them as much a part of the garden as its fences, paths and patios.  It is amazing no-one thought of this a long time ago – garden furniture that actually fits in with the design of the place. Imagine the difference:  on the one hand, some kind of pathetically flapping stripy umbrella that spends half its life in a shed; on the other, beautiful shade sails, giving patches of shade and seclusion under their sculptural bellies. It's time to ditch the tat and get with the programme – make something permanent for a change and enjoy the garden all year round.
