Turf Rug Q&A
Is this infected?
I was playing in a soccer game yesterday on a turf field, and I slide tackled a couple of times absolutely destroying my knees with "rug burn". I have a total of five big splotches all over my legs, but one is just terrible; I've had it for a little more than 24 hours now, and all day today it has been secreting a CLEAR ORANGISH fluid, almost like jell-o. I treated it with Bactine as soon as I got home and I bandaged it up pretty well, and I've had it bandaged all day. I just recently took off the bandages to see how it was doing and it seemed like it was better so I was just letting it air out a little bit, when it started cranking out the fluid again. I wiped it off and it seems to have subsided and there's just a small layer of fluid covering it.
Here's what I have now (and what I don't have):
- A fair amount of clear orangish drainage
- no particular redness
- no inflammation
- no unusual amount of pain
- no increased temp.
So... is this infected?
The orange fluid you are seeing is tissue fluid, and is normal from any type of burn, which is what "rug rash" is, an abrasive injury. What you need to do is 1) cleanse the injury with cotton ball soaked in soapy water followed by a clear water rinse every day 2) soak a cotton ball in hydrogen peroxide and apply every day 3) dry the injury, and then apply an antibacterial ointment (don't use Bactine, but buy a generic one containing Neosporin-Bacitracin) 4) cover the injury with a clean bandage and change it daily. 5) Keep bandage dry.
If you see any swelling or redness, have it checked by a doc. Otherwise, it will heal up within a week.
Keeping a Green lawn?
A few weeks ago i put some scotts super turf builder fertilizer on my lawn along with some grass seeds. After getting it cut today i noticed how pretty and green it was....it looked like plush green rug. I have to admit that im proud of myself because this is my first home and the first time that i have ever attempted to take care of a lawn and just a few weeks ago the grass was so yellow and dry. My question is how do i maintain that pretty green plush look? I havent been watering it everyday but then it hasent been that hot either...not yet anyway.
Should i buy more fertilizer and grass seeds or should i just water it everyday once the weather gets hotter? Also i saw a some seeds called kentucky blue glass and i thought about buying that but i thought maybe im jumping gun being that im a rookie at this. Any suggestion on what i should do to maintain my lawn is appreciated? Thanks!
Do NOT water everyday. It will cause problems and your lawn will get weak.
Water deeply, and less often. Maybe twice a week, but once should be enough. You need to just be sure you get enough water down into the root zone.
A little fertilizer every month or two will probably do the trick. But if you have good soil and healthy grass you can fertilize like twice a YEAR. Maybe never.
Get a good sharp mower and mulch the cuttings back into the grass.
Stay away from chemicals as much as possible.
Sounds like you could get a lot from a little reading. Much depends on your type of grass, your climate zone, your soil. And what goes on in your community, like water restrictions and other rules and expectations.
